16 New iPhone and iPad Games You Should Be Playing This Week

By Jim Squires |

Get your favorite iDevice on the charger, folks – you’re going to need a lot of battery this weekend. Whether it’s a new NBA season that you can play on your phone (while you watch on your TV), a surprisingly satisfying match-3 RPG, or transforming bird-car things, there’s plenty to keep you busy in this week’s new iPhone and iPad games.

NBA 2K15

screen1136x1136[1]Following hot on the heels of the card-collecting free-to-play My NBA 2K15, NBA 2K15 is the real deal basketball game that fans of the series have been waiting for. 2K’s last proper mobile NBA game was well received, so this one seems like a slam dunk.

The Lord of the Rings: Legends of Middle Earth

screen1024x1024[2]Admittedly, we know shockingly little about Kabam’s latest Lord of the Rings games. They’re promising “a role-playing and character collection game,” which could mean anything from a card battler to an Avengers Alliance-style RPG. We’re expecting the former, but hoping for the latter.

Angry Birds Transformers

Angry Birds Transformers 1We’ve played it, we liked it, and we think you will too! A shooting game twist on the old Angry Birds tower-knockdown formula feels like a fresh change for the series, and collection bird/Transformer mashups can’t help but put a smile on your face. Be sure to read our Angry Birds Transformers Tips, Cheats and Strategies if you want a few helpful pointers on this one.

Fat Princess: Piece of Cake

screen1136x1136[2]A match-3 RPG set in the world of a once-beloved PlayStation Network game? It sounds like a strange use of the license, but having played this during its soft launch in Canada, I’m happy to report that this is one of the better match-3 RPGs out there.

Red Riding Hood and the Restless Wolves

screen1136x1136[1]If you like when fairy tales are turned on their heads, Red Riding Hood and the Restless Wolves should be fairly high on your radar this week. It’s a platformer about time travel and sustainable energy. Bet you didn’t see that coming.

Hay Ewe

screen1136x1136[1]Team17, the fine folks behind worms, continue their publishing efforts with this pun-tastic puzzler that, in their words, “isn’t for the sheepish.” Sheesh. We get it. Bonus: you can create your own puzzles and share with your friends.

screen1136x1136[2]You can navigate three little lanes, right? BWAHAHAHAHA. Good luck, bro.

Sentinels of the Multiverse

screen1024x1024[1]Another top notch tabletop game comes to the iPad (at a price much lower than the boxed version). This one involves building a team of superheroes and saving the world through card-drawn powers.

Hail to the King: Deathbat

screen1136x1136[2]Yes, Avenged Sevenfold made a game. No, it’s not April Fool’s Day. And from the early impressions we’re hearing, it’s not too bad!

screen1136x1136[1]The creator of 868-HACK is back, and this time he’s created an arcade game that’s all about circling your enemies. Sounds… unique? We’d expect nothing less from the brilliant mind of Michael Brough.

Tactical Heroes

screen1024x1024[1]At a glance, you may think “oh dear, ANOTHER Clash of Clans clone?!” But Tactical Heroes sets itself apart by bringing turn-based combat to the base-building genre.

Princess and Knight

screen1136x1136[1]We don’t see too many Fire Emblem-style SRPG’s on the App Store for some reason, so when a smaller dev brings one to release, how can we not give it a mention?

The Silent Age Episode 2

silentage2-1The long-awaited sequel to this sci-fi adventure is finally here, and it’s an in-app purchase from the original game (which itself is a free download). If you haven’t played it yet, you’re “I’m waiting for the second act” excuse has finally run out of fuel.

Outcast Odyssey

outcast-odyssey-3If you’re a fan of card-battle games, Bandai Namco’s new entry mixes it with a healthy dose of dungeon crawling. Sounds like a neat enough combination, right? Like all card battle games, this one is free to download, so there’s no cost barrier to stop you from finding out if it’s as neat in execution as it sounds on paper.

Adrenaline Rush Miami Drive

AdrenalineRush_i5_5Wish behind-the-back racers weren’t always so darned lane-based? The latest game to join the Bulkypix stable gives you a little more control over your car, which should be a welcome change.

Galaxy Siege 2

screen1136x1136[1]Assemble your own space ship and see how long you can survive in the universe. If Galaxy Trucker was about action instead of strategy, we think it might look a little something like this.
