    At this point I should really stop being so surprised when a unique take on something we've already seen a million times before hits my iPhone. Maybe it's my console background bias where multimillion dollar projects tend to more often than not just play it safe. The iOS world is still relatively untamed, and there are great games being made by small teams of super creative people. Tiny Wings is one of those games.

    When it comes to App Store scandals, the thievery story about The Blocks Cometh is easily one of the most interesting tales of 2011 so far. And yet amidst all the hoopla and skulldiggery, there was a really good game that was just waiting for its proper release. Developer Halfbot has finally brought their survival game to iOS gamers in the manner in which it was always intended - and it was well worth the wait.

    There's an old proverb: "The enemy of my enemy is my friend." It wasn't too long ago that we reported on how EdisonGame stole The Blocks Cometh from developer Halfbot. However, it wasn't just Halfbot's creation that was stolen. The illicit version of the game featured a character from League of Evil. Needless to say, the two wronged developers were more than a little upset with how their hard work was being ripped off, but it's probably safe to assume that nobody expected the two to wind up joining forces.

    One of the first iOS games that I absolutely fell head over heels for was Canabalt. The combination of simplicity and style really made playing it a memorable experience. It was also the first time that I had to admit to myself that the touchscreen could provide an optimum control scheme (having seen many poor ports I was still skeptical). Jump & Slide ups the complexity a tiny bit and changes up art style but provides that same fantastic experience.

Rainbow Pony does little beyond the standard, and its charm simply can't carry it for too long.

    We've seen a lot of distance-running games on the iPhone. They're simple yet solid timewasters that are appropriate to their price on the App Store. I've been hooked on Rat on a Scooter for a while now, and still fire it up every now and again. Clumsy Bob doesn't try to re-invent the wheel, but is a fun diversion if you're into high-scoring challenges.
