If you've ever played a game like Haypi Kingdom or Island Empire and wished there were just a few more spaceships and high-tech soldiers, Avalon Wars is for you. It offers up a similar, menu-driven style simulation that lets you build up a planetary settlement and engage in intergalactic combat with other players. This means that the gameplay straddles the line between being both deep and boring, at times giving you plenty of control over what you want to do, while bombarding you with repetitive actions and difficult to parse menus. But for those who are into that sort of thing, there's a good amount on offer here.
Crime games. They may just be the biggest genre on Facebook, even bigger than farming. So it's a bit curious that MTV's digital arm, MTVi, decided to launch Capital City on Facebook, yet another game that puts you in the role of a mob boss. That being said, from what we've played so far, it's at least a solid and engaging take on the well worn theme.
It's been a long time since FrontierVille was even a top Zynga game, let alone a top Facebook game. Despite that, developers are still rushing out FrontierVille clones like S.O.S., which replaces FrontierVille's Wild West theme with a tropical deserted island theme. In S.O.S., you slowly build a village, grow crops, and try to rescue other survivors (i.e., your friends playing the game) to join your tribe. While there have been other "castaway" themed games on Facebook, most of them have used fairly different styles of play.
In theory, Castle Age: Heart of Darkness has everything you could want in an RPG. It's deep and seemingly complex, features a dark fantasy world to explore, and offers up plenty of combat and lots of character customization. Sounds good, right? It's just too bad that virtually every aspect of the game, from exploring to fighting, is incredibly dull.
Strategy games on Facebook have, to a certain degree, ossified around the time-consuming Travian formula of manufacturing resources, building armies, and battling other players for dominance and territory. Only variations in the GUI skin and the theme sometimes separate these games, which otherwise use a very standard interface. Total Domination: Nuclear Strategy is a take on this type of game that clearly wants to shake up some aspects of the formula, particularly the tendency toward Spartan, near-identical user interfaces.
When news of Civilization World first hit the mainstream gaming press back in 2009, the hype was such that you could have been forgiven for initially thinking that someone had found civilizations on other worlds. At last, many said, here was the messianic Facebook game for "real" gamers; here was a game that would send Zynga fleeing madly down its perfect CityVille streets. The truth, of course, is a little more complex.
Eastside Games is a brand new social game development studio in Vancouver and today it has announced its first game: Zombinis, described as a collectible battle game with zombified stuffed animals. Considering that it's coming from the same people who made Pot Farm, it's a pretty good assumption that the game will be a little crazy.
