With a name that is excessively generic and a premise obviously feeding off the popularity of the gaming juggernaut that is the Call of Duty franchise, it's surprising just how refreshing Modern War is. The gameplay will be instantly familiar to fans of games like Mafia Wars 2 and War Commander from Facebook, but the mix of contemporary combat settings and simulation/strategy make this a worthwhile pick-up-and-play option on the go.

There are a lot of strategy games on Facebook. Some take place in a post-apocalyptic wasteland, others feature warring factions from alien planets, and some imagine a near future overrun by conflict. They all have different themes, but they are all serious. Galaxy Life isn't quite like that. While it has very similar strategy gameplay, it wraps it all up in a very cute sci-fi aesthetic with adorable little aliens that feel ripped from a Dreamworks film. It doesn't advance the genre in any way, but it does make it more cuddly.
Battle Nations is an action strategy game from Z2 Live Inc. for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. Building up your army and using them to their fullest isn't exactly the most easy part but luckily Gamezebo's quick start guide is here to get you on the right track!
With Empires & Allies, Zynga essentially took the CityVille template and added combat to it. And with Battle Nations, developer Z2Live has done something very similar. In a lot of ways it's Trade Nations with turn-based combat. You still build up a city, harvest resources, and create goods. Only now you have to deal with training troops and defending your territory as well. It doesn't have the deepest city building mechanic, and the simplified combat leaves something to be desired, but when put together the two halves make for a largely enjoyable experience.
Contrary to popular opinion, it usually takes more than a magic sword or a tragic event to make a hero. It takes hard work, grueling training sessions, and — based on the look of the upcoming mobile game Hero Academy — a whole lot of multiplayer fun.

THX Games have taken two gaming favorites and blended them together to make the Facebook equivalent of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Triviador is a fun mix of Risk-style strategy and Trivial Pursuit, and though it hits some awkward snags, it's still a title quick-fix gamers will want to check out.
