The past of Smith & Tinker's Nanovor series is long and complicated. It began as a physical card/toy system to be played alongside a PC program (not unlike today's Skylanders). That program was shut down in the end of 2010, in lieu of its free-to-play browser successor, Nanovor Evolutions (which was also cancelled). There's also been an animated web series or two floating around. Today, Smith & Tinker revives the series once again, bringing a free-to-play version (simply called Nanovor) to iOS.
Simply rolling out a real-time strategy game in a fantasy setting probably isn't going to cause much of a stir, because honestly, it's been done. Making said RTS free to play? That's worth a look, and thanks to Frogwares, it's a reality in the form of World of Battles: Morningstar.
In Warlock: Master of the Arcane, players will wield magic, raise armies and build empires in a Civilization-style strategy game that pits wizard against wizard in an arcane battle for the title of Warlock.
World Without End is an accurate name for the strategy role-playing game that's currently being put together by Marvel and DC artist/writer, Steve Uy. It takes place on a seamless world map that's crawling with fantastic monsters and scenery that looks like it was cut straight from a comic book—a truly boundless universe. There's nothing to stop you or slow you down as you explore the vast overworld, aside from the critters and ghouls that are waiting to ambush you and turn your party into a meal.
The upcoming movie Battleship appears to take space battles and put them in the water. Stellar Impact, available now on Steam, does the opposite: It turns multiplayer sci-fi skirmishes into something approximating naval combat thanks to the elimination of that pesky third dimension.

Over the last year or so, we've seen plenty of genres that aren't traditionally social make the jump to Facebook with pretty great results. Hidden object games are a good example of this. So are role-playing games. And now, thanks to Playdom's Armies of Magic, we can add side-scrolling defense to that list.
Where do babies come from? We'll get back to you on that. Where do aliens come from? Why, they're grown on a farm of course. Or at least that's what Alien Farm, a free-to-play farming/combat game for iOS, would have us believe.
