I've never been one for adventure on the high seas thanks to my propensity for seasickness, but from the safety of my laptop, I'm all for it. If you're like me, you might want to keep your eyes peeled for Invincible Armada to set sail on Facebook. Korean developer Neowiz is cooking up a strategy RPG set in the golden era of sailing vessels, complete with naval combat, base building and trading, and with nary a wave in sight.
Beta testing is great, but if you really want to help shape a game's development, it helps to get in on the process even earlier than that. The catch is that few developers actually let you do that, but Wonderstruck is allowing people to take a pre-alpha version of its upcoming action/strategy game Polycraft for a spin. Consider it a hands-on sneak peek at how you might survive on a mysterious island inhabited by hostile natives.
A finalist in IGF 2013's "Excellence in Visual Art" category, Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime takes place "inside a pink Death Star locked in battle with hordes of space baddies." These never-ending baddies can only be repelled by the two astronauts inside the space station, who are controlling turrets, lasers, shields, and more—while they themselves are controlled by you and a friend.
Tensions are brewing in the galaxy. The Galactic Council, formed to maintain peace between the spacefaring races after years of devastating war, is crumbling under pressure. Alliances are formed in secret, while old treaties wither and die. War - again - seems inevitable.
I've begun to notice certain frameworks within many free-to-play games that almost function as a set of game design sub-genres. The reason I'm bringing this up is because I know I've played a game very much like Steam Age before, only it wasn't thoroughly soaked in steampunk. I like steampunk.
Everyone who's been doing any social or mobile gaming over the past few years knows that towers need to be defended. Quite often, actually. Occasionally, they also need to be attacked. But the gang at Scottish developer Criss Cross Games sees more in towers, making them the stars of Cog-a-lot, a blast of medieval siege weaponry and magic-infused science that is set to hit Facebook in the near future.

As much as I loved the vehicle customization and puzzle-like aspects of 2012's Bad Piggies, in some ways, Noble Nutlings is the game I always wanted Bad Piggies to be. The first release from ex-Rovio team Boomlagoon, Noble Nutlings is a fantastic physics-based racing game, where razor-sharp reflexes will determine whether you cross that finish line in balloon-bursting glory, or land in a heap of leaves and twigs on the forest floor.
