    Combat Monsters, the virtual card battle game with echoes of Magic: The Gathering is now in full release, and if you played and enjoyed it during the beta period, you'll be pleased to know that very little has changed over the past couple of months. And if you haven't, you probably should - it's a fun, challenging strategy card game, and while some of the multiplayer features are lacking, it gets the free-to-play formula right, a rare accomplishment these days.Even if you have only a basic idea of what Magic: The Gathering is, there's no mistaking the similarities between that famous card game and Combat Monsters. In fact, Paul Johnson, the co-founder of Rubicon Development is an "avid player" of Magic, but wanted a video game with a more tactical experience. Thus, Combat Monsters, in which you not only collect virtual cards of various types and abilities and deploy them in single and multiplayer duels, but also maneuver on a 3D game board, complete with special hexes that can amplify your powers - or your enemy's."Combat Monsters is very much an "easy to learn, tough to master" game. You begin by choosing a hero - a warrior, an archer, or a mage - who will serve as your personal avatar, and are then given a basic starting deck with which to play. The bulk of your deck will, initially at least, be composed of various fantasy monsters like orcs, minotaurs, elves, zombies and so forth, each of which belongs to one of the three character classes; there are also cards for weapons, armor, equipment, spells, and magical runes. Some "supplemental" cards only work with specific races or classes, and some monster cards have special abilities that manifest under the right conditions: zombies gain health whenever a monster on the board dies, for instance, while orcs gain an attack bonus for every friendly orc in play.

    Nothing like a seaside getaway! Too bad you're not here to soak up the rays. Sunshine Bay puts you in the managerial shoes at a resort where people come to kick back and relax. It's your job to make sure their basic needs are met, sending them on pleasure cruises and providing shopping centers to turn your piece of oceanfront property into a bustling economical juggernaut!Sunshine Bay is a serene building sim that only looks complex on the surface. The basic goal is to send visitors out on voyages and use the money you earn to expand your shoreline town. A bigger town, in turn, allows you to build bigger and better boats, creating a feedback loop that (hopefully) ends in a bustling, successful resort."Click on the icons at the bottom of the screen to add new structures or check your warehouse contents. When passengers arrive or boats need tending to, an alert appears above them on the map. Click, collect any icons that pop out, and then repeat! You should keep as many ships out to sea as your piers can support, so always have one eye on expansion while the other monitors potential passengers.  Much like any simulation game, you'll also receive missions to complete. They range from building orders to quick voyages out to sea. Quests earn you cash and increase your level ranking, giving you access to more buildings and boats.

    Some might say that strategy games are a dime a dozen on the App Store these days. But when we get right down to the heart of the matter, a full-fledged strategy experience with expressive graphics and fulfilling gameplay to match is a much rarer thing to find: which is where Lords of Discord by Herocraft comes in, an upcoming strategy game that features Humans and Demons both vying for control of a rich fantasy world. I recently had a chance to speak with Andreev Alexander of Herocraft, who also served as the team lead on Lords of Discord, to find out a bit more about what inspired this exciting new addition to the strategy genre, as well as what gamers can expect to find once the title launches next year on a variety of platforms.Alexander and the team at Herocraft are certainly no strangers to the world of making strategy games, as their past roster of titles includes the well-received Majesty: The Fantasy Kingdom Sim and Majesty: The Northern Expansion. However, the folks at Herocraft felt that the strategy genre as a whole was not being fully represented in all of the various mobile app stores that are available today, and so they sought to make a game that would help to fill that void, inspired by the likes of old-school turn-based strategy games like Kings Bounty and Heroes of Might & Magic 3. After their prior work on the Majesty series, Alexander and company have learned a lot about the proper ways in which to make a successful strategy game for the mobile market today in 2013, explaining "we must pay attention to the evolution of mobile devices and choose a strategy accordingly that will make the game realistic and graphically up-to-date at the time of release."Lords of Discord features a single storyline that interweaves events from two different complementary campaigns: the Humans and the Demons. However, it is only through playing as both separate factions that players will ultimately be able to realize the broader scope of the game's storyline and background lore. Alexander tells me, "Whichever race you play as first, we hope, that you'll be keen to dive into the other one; you'll be solving problems created by your success [and] goals from the first campaign." The game will initially launch with the campaign for the Human race, while the Demon campaign will be coming a little bit later on in the first free title update. As far as future updates down the road are concerned, Alexander and the team are already in the planning stages for adding new races such as Dwarves, the Undead, and Elves, in addition to entirely new campaigns as well.

    Samurai Siege enters a crowded field of mobile combat simulation games whose notable members include Clash of Clans and Greed for Glory. The basic concepts of building your village, strengthening defenses, improving structures, training troops, and sending them out to conquer other villages remains the same. Now, however, instead of dragons or medieval warriors, it's you and a bunch of samurai warriors! Not too shabby, if you ask us.Samurai Siege takes place in two main modes: village management and combat. The former allows you to place and upgrade new structures, such as marketplaces that generate coins or arrow towers to provide rudimentary defense. Here you also unlock troops and train them for battle, storing them in your training fields until it's time to head out and do some conquering. Combat pits you against well-defended enemy villages. Tap the screen to deploy troops, then sit back and watch the action. In the end, it's all about gaining more resources so you can beef up your village to become the ultimate samurai warrior town this side of Kyoto."Currencies are threefold in Samurai Siege. Coins, represented by green circles, are generated from markets, stored in vaults, and are used to build and upgraded defenses. Critically important is upgrading your castle so you can unlock more units and buildings, so never pass up an opportunity to rake in cash. Essence is earned from wells, held in storage tanks, and is used to build and upgrade certain structures. Diamonds are the basic "hurry-up" currency and can be spent to instantly build things, train troops, etc. All of these can be purchased via microtransactions, but you also earn coins and essence by sacking villages. As if you needed another excuse to go out and conquer things.

And so, with a laboratory packed to the brim with experimental weaponry, you must defend your employer's interests from an evil government hell-bent on taking that which does not belong to them.Chillingo is best known for a more casual approach to gaming, but with Steampunk Tower, the publisher turns to most tower defense tropes for a title that is accessible to newer players, but addictively satisfying to seasoned veterans. Whereas the genre has most often put an emphasis on preparing defenses and tending to multiple locations while fighting off enemy waves, Steampunk Tower instead places the focus on a single tower with varying slots to place your weapons."As opposed to most other TD games, however, your guns (consisting of four types: machine gun, cannon, lightning gun, and saw-propeller) can be assigned to any slot at any time by swiping the screen. The more weapons you purchase and place, the more slots become available. Your once nominal tower soon becomes a ziggurat of dizzying height, and a gruesome killing machine to all who would oppose you. Enemy waves approach from the left and right in various formations, so the ability to reposition your guns on the fly makes for a feeling of greater control and strategy.
