    Gabe Newell on the crazy future of Steam

    Valve co-founder Gabe Newell has a grand idea of where the Steam platform should go. He finds the store as it is to be "really boring," and would like to see users play a bigger role in both the creation and curation of content. He's also dissatisfied with how Greenlight operates, and hopes to do away with it completely. But this only touches on the surface of what Newell would like to see changed, and he recently outlined his hopes for the platform in a talk at the University of Texas.

    Having grown up in a forest, I know from experience that even the slightest unexpected sound can send a shiver down one's spine. It's usually nothing—a mouse, a hungry raccoon—but that doesn't make it any less unsettling. And in the case of Knock-Knock, it's clear that protagonist The Caretaker has a legitimate reason to be scared: There's a strange presence dwelling in and around his house, and getting rid of it won't be easy.

    We at Gamezebo are big fans of Steam's Greenlight service, as evidenced by our recurring Greenlight Spotlight feature. So whenever Valve announces that a new batch of games are heading to Steam, we throw confetti around and binge on cupcakes. This is the fourth time we've done this, and boy do our stomachs hate us.

    Steam's Greenlight service has had its share of problems, but that hasn't stopped it from accomplishing its number one goal: helping indies get their games on Steam. Valve announced the third batch of games to make the cut today, along with (for the first time) a handful non-game software.

    Nitrome seems to have a penchant for alternate identities. The first game that put them on my radar was Gunbrick, a puzzling shooter about a gun...that was also a brick! Now, they've mounted a Steam Greenlight effort to approve Flightless, a puzzle platformer centered around ducks...who moonlight as thieves! To be quite honest, I'm beginning to wonder if this developer even lives in a Nitro Dome!

    The Steam Greenlight initiative got off to a bit of a rocky start, but that hasn't kept it from doing what it was created to do: Bring more games to Steam. Valve has announced the first 10 games to garner the upvotes required to receive full releases on the Steam platform, and it's a pretty impressive lineup. From diehard survival horror fans to random-aliens-getting-high-in-the-jungle enthusiasts, there's something here for everyone.

    It seems the light in Valve's community-driven game approval system has been proverbially downgraded to yellow. In an announcement pushed out September 4th, the company identified a "significant amount of noise and clutter" being submitted to Greenlight, resulting in less than ideal discoverability for worthy projects. As a result, they've added a $100 submission fee (which Valve will donate to charity) for all hoping to post their potential next big thing.

And so, it seems, does Valve, who pitched the service as a way to put the publishing power more squarely in the hands of fans. Today, the digital download giant took Greenlight live, and we're here to share some of the details. Doesn't it all feel so warm and fuzzy?
