    PC Gamer founder to write first standalone Star Wars film

    On Thursday, Lucasfilm revealed on the official Star Wars website that the first standalone Star Wars film — one of the many planned to orbit the releases of the new trilogy - has locked in a director and screenwriter.Gareth Edwards (of 2010's Monsters and this summer's blockbuster, Godzilla) is set to direct, while Gary Whitta will produce the film's screenplay."From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid," Whitta states in the announcement, "Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I'm still pinching myself."

You see, there was a time when the App Store was littered with Star Wars games like The Battle for Hoth, Falcon Gunner, and Star Wars Cantina - but like a certain galaxy far away, that was a long long time ago.Expired licensing deals killed of the past generation of mobile Star Wars games, but if today's announcement is any indication, we might be in line for a renaissance. Hot off the heels of their first Star Wars mobile game, Tiny Death Star, Disney has just announced Star Wars: Assault Team.While they're remaining mum on details, what little has been revealed makes it look like another entry in the crowded card battle space - the one dominated by games like Marvel War of Heroes and… well, another Star Wars game: Star Wars Force Collection. How terribly awkward.

    NimbleBit have done some pretty amazing things in short time that smartphone gaming has been a thing, though none of their subsequent releases have managed to reach quite as high on the popularity scale as 2011's Tiny Tower.Now, more than two years after their top game's release, NimbleBit are taking us on a tower-building adventure in a galaxy far far away. Star Wars: Tiny Death Star will, as the official press release puts it, let players "live life on the dark side and join Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader on a mission to attract Galactic bitizens, run intergalactic businesses, and build an all-new Death Star."This isn't the first collaboration Disney had made with a popular studio in recent months. My Muppets Show was a re-working of My Singing Monsters, tackled by the game's original developer Big Blue Bubble. And let's not forget Imangi tackling games like Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz for the House of Mouse.There's no word on an exact release date for Star Wars: Tiny Death Star quite yet, but Disney are saying that we can expect a worldwide release "soon." Though if you ask me, it can't be soon enough. JUST LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE JAWA BITIZENS!!
