Sometimes you lose sight of how humorous it can be until a game reminds you, which is what Flick Kick Football Legends does so well. The gameplay isn't too shabby either, but a veritable barrage of ads kills the mood a bit. Actually, the onslaught kills it more than a bit, which is rather unfortunate.You won't find a more pleasantly surprising set-up for a game than this one, which places you at the helm of a football squad seeking to reclaim some of its lost glory. The thing is, the rebuilding is only necessary because one of the star player's power-up shots went awry, killing the old manager in a fiery explosion. It's a clever bit of poking fun at video game conventions that's presented in comic book style, and as an added bonus, the tutorial is woven into it too.As you'll soon discover, the ghost of the old skipper is still around to help mentor you. With his help, you set off to advance back up through the league system in what appears to be a fictional 1970s England, building up your team with better players and winning promotions to ever tougher leagues. It's a big play concept that sadly comes up short of a touchdown due to frustrating controls and annoying glitches.Run Games pitched the Kickstarter community on the idea of a football game with beat 'em up and RPG elements inspired by classics like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam. Not surprisingly, backers rallied around that concept, and the result is a game that challenges you with building the best possible team for winning at a, shall we say, very physical style of football."Since one of the main offensive and defensive techniques is punching opposing players, that's possibly an understatement. You start Football Heroes with a full squad of 18 (the games are 8-on-8, plus you get a kicker/punter and a kick return specialist) athletes ready to take part in a series of tournaments and leagues. They're just not very good at first, so you've got to train them up by playing, and hopefully winning, some games.The controls are simple enough for anyone to understand. A virtual thumb stick makes players run, and can appear nearly anywhere you touch on the screen. Tapping the screen throws punches, while tapping on players either switches who you control (on defense) or throws a pass to that player (on offense). Swiping in any direction launches your guy into a head-first diving tackle.

Its crowdfunded project Puzzle Football: Quest of the Gridiron takes things to another level by mixing in a heavy dose of RPG goodness too.Inspired by classic RPGs like the Final Fantasy series, old school football games like Tecmo Bowl, and even card-battle games, Puzzle Football has one of those "so crazy it just might work" types of high concepts. The idea is to build a team of players, complete with equipment that complements the style of play you have in mind.Out on the gridiron is where the puzzle element enters the equation. Below the playing field is a board full of tiles similar to the ones seen in puzzle games too numerous to mention. The difference here is that you'll be lining them up to enable your team to run short passes, long passes, or running plays, any of which can be boosted by power cards that can turn the tide when used judiciously. According to Matt Udvari, Lead Designer for Part Time Evil, a lot of thought went into how this intriguing mix of elements would work when combined together."The most challenging part of the puzzle aspect is making that affect your football plays in a very clear way," he said. "The player should know that the thing they do on the puzzle board makes things happen on the football field. From the beginning, I personally made it my goal to avoid moments of 'why did that just happen,' which I see a lot when I play puzzle games for fun. That's why we do a 'play breakdown' after each play that says why the play happened the way it did."

That may or may not be enough money to warrant a sequel, but Reliance Games feels there's more life in the franchise to make Real Steel: World Robot Boxing for iOS and Android. It's free-to-play, simple to learn, and full of cool visuals, but some unfortunate design decisions keep it from being a knockout.Set after the events of the movie (and knowledge of the film is absolutely not necessary), World Robot Boxing features Atom, Noisy Boy, Midas, and some of the franchise's other stars, but also expands both the scope and the cast of characters. Your ultimate goal is to dethrone Zeus, the WRB champion, by fighting your way through multiple increasingly difficult circuits of robot fighters. Three bots are yours to choose from to start, with a fourth available if you can convince a friend to play too."Let's get the obvious part out of the way: boxing robots is just a flat out awesome idea, and one that appeals to the five-year-old boy or girl in all of us. This game doesn't disappoint in its efforts to bring those clashes to life, sporting better graphics than the first Real Steel mobile game and some creative robot designs. The themes are great - there's a football-inspired fighter, one with a blackjack motif, a cowboy bot with arms shaped like six-shooters, and more.Pitting them against each other is fairly straightforward, with a virtual d-pad on the left and buttons on the right. Boxing is a strictly 2D affair here, which limits you to punching and blocking, but there's still some strategy required as you look to counter when your opponent's guard is down. The game doesn't explain this fully, but pressing the pad while hitting the light or heavy attack buttons throws a slightly different kind of punch for each direction, so there are more options than it may initially appear.

I've never been big on hunting games. It's not that I take issue with gunning down (mostly) defenseless virtual animals with ridiculously overpowered military hardware, although it is pretty ridiculous all things considered. It's just that I've never been able to get into them. And yet, oddly enough, I've found myself really getting into Deer Hunter 2014 and its simple yet oddly strategic gunplay.Deer Hunter 2014 is basically a collection of simple hunts for various types of wild animals. It's a bit less involved than most other hunting sims of course - most likely to cater to the pick-up-and-play mobile audience. Rather than tracking targets through the underbrush across acres of simulated woods, players simply strafe left and right across a limited area to get a better view of their prey. Instead of focusing on the chase, it's all about the kill shot. Where the animal is hit (head, heart, lungs, etc) can make all the difference."The money earned from each hunt can then be used to upgrade weapons or purchase new ones, which doesn't just make one a more efficient killing machine. Hunts have recommended loadouts (which can make success difficult if the advice isn't followed) and the occasional requirement that will prevent players from taking part until their gear is up to snuff, so no upgrades means no progress. Fortunately there are a number of different kinds of hunts to take on, including the more typical Hunting Series, the almost arcade-like Contract Hunt, and Trophy Hunts that can unlock new regions. There's almost always something to do to earn a bit of cash towards that next scope or rifle barrel.
