    Sony announces new micro-console: PlayStation Vita TV

    In a surprise move today at their Tokyo Games Show press conference, Sony has unveiled a new "micro-console" of sorts called the PlayStation Vita TV. It seems that the Vita TV will directly compete with other like hardware from the camps at Ouya and Gamestick, not to mention other big contenders such as Apple and even Google.

    With the next generation of consoles kicking off later this year, Sony is doing everything they can to earn the trust and loyalty of developers. First, they made the PS4 an easy console to develop for. Next, they began courting indie developers like crazy and trying to convince them to bring their games to the PS3, Vita and PS4. Finally and most recently, they've decided to waive the licensing fees for bringing games to PlayStation Mobile.

    As many of you can surely attest to, trying to play a console game on a touchscreen can be kind of a pain. The easiest way to get around this is to purchase a physical controller that's compatible with your phone or tablet. Problem is, not all of those controllers are well-made, and many of the better ones are a bit on the pricy end. If you happen to own an Xperia phone and a PS3, you can kiss that problem goodbye: Sony is gearing up to provide official support for DualShock 3 controllers on Xperia devices.

    While it only launched earlier this month, PlayStation Mobile is an idea that's been in the works for quite some time.  A dedicated Android storefront for "PlayStation-certified" devices, mobile gamers around the world had dreams of playing classic Sony franchises and PlayStation ports on their smartphones and tablets.  But then it launched, and we all saw what PlayStation Mobile really was - just another in a seemingly endless series of Android storefronts that does little to differentiate itself.

    There's a lot of talk about the digital future of gaming, but it's not an easy concept to pin down. It could mean the ability to download any and all games released, but the size of some titles would make that a difficult sell. Alternatively, there's the potential of streaming titles over the internet. There are problems with that too, of course, but Sony's recent acquisition of Gaikai shows they have faith in the concept.

    Gaming is becoming more and more fragmented thanks to the availability of multiple consoles, phones, and handhelds, to say nothing of all the free stuff that's available on Facebook. It's enough to make a game lover ask, "Why can't we live in peace? Why can't console engineers just put some of their exclusive IPs on mobile platforms?" Surprisingly, Sony has said, "You know what? That's not such a bad idea."
