My Shops Review
There's an endless variety of business management sims to play on Facebook, so it's quite an achievement when a developer comes up with a genuinely novel twist on the formula. My Shops has you trying to manage an ever-increasing variety of shops located on a single avenue, instead of endlessly micromanaging a single store. This is a very intuitive way to change up the formula, but surprisingly, there's very little on Facebook right now that really plays the way My Shops does. Some elements of typical timer-driven sim play are there, but there's also a lot of strategy and even some action.
Treasure Story Review
Coming off the heels of a few cut-and-paste rehashes of earlier releases, we were starting to worry that iPhone games developer TeamLava might have lost their muse. Treasure Story has put those concerns to rest, as the team has gone back to doing what they do best: tackling popular Facebook formulas that have yet to make a successful transition to the iPhone.
CaveTown Review
CaveTown is one of those games that technically functions and is playable, but contains absolutely no originality. Unless you're looking to relive all of your past experiences with FrontierVille (down to the letter) but in an even earlier timeframe, you're better off sticking with the original - the game that did it first, and the game that does it best.
CityVille Review
CityVille is Zynga's long-awaited entry in the city-building genre, which has proven itself amazingly durable on Facebook. Where many city-builders must be played strictly in brief bursts, CityVille actually offers enough to do that you can spend a considerably longer amount of time with it per session. In theory you can only do things until you run out of energy, but I found myself needing to wait for things to happen more often than I found myself waiting for my energy to regenerate.
Tap Zoo: Arctic Review
If you've ever dreamed of being Santa - flying through the air in your sleigh, bringing joy to children everywhere, able to eat mountains of cookies and milk without fear of heart attack - then you also have to dream about all that upkeep of the reindeer and any other creatures near your Canadian North Pole home. Tap Zoo: Christmas lets you have all the fun of taking care of the animals, but without all the back-breaking work and smell. It's too bad that the game has less longevity than Christmas pudding.
Paradise Life Preview
We've been here before. Sure, we clobbered snakes instead of crabs and took quests from a grizzled forty-niner instead of an Ariel-inspired mermaid, but Paradise Life is so close in design and play style to Zynga's celebrated Frontierville that it might as well be an island-themed mod. Of course, this also means it's fun. If you were never comfortable living out your days as a hardscrabble settler digging up grass and rocks in the Old West, you may enjoy digging up grass and rocks on your own island. Social gaming beach bums, rejoice: This is the game for you.
