When it comes to re-publishing old games on handhold systems, Square-Enix is currently dominating the scene. Earlier this week, the publisher revealed that Final Fantasy III will be hitting the App Store in the near future. The news wasn't really that surprising, considering how Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II are already available for iOS devices - but that didn't make it any less exciting.
There's a real lack of quality sci-fi RPG's in the App Store right now, but it looks like fans of the genre are due to get a pretty epic one in the near future. Rodeo Games is going to unleash Hunters Episode One on iOS devices shortly, and it looks like the game might just provide players with a huge amount of content to play through.
I'm a pretty big gamer, and I consider Sony's Shadow of the Colossus to be one of the great masterpieces when it comes to action/adventure titles. When I heard that Wharr: The Colossus Age, a new platformer for the iPhone, had a lot in common with the aforementioned title, I was pretty excited to play it. But within a few minutes of playing Wharr I realized that this connection was a pretty monumental lie. Yes, players control a character who has to kill giants with a sword, but the fun and quality present in Shadow of the Colossus are glaringly absent from this game.
When it comes to influences, Monster Story only takes from the biggest games around. It features elements of FrontierVille, Angry Birds, and there's even a dash of Pokemon. And it's all wrapped up in a flashy, Saturday morning cartoon, anime style. This is one of the best role playing experiences on Facebook, though it's hampered by dull boss fights and hefty friend requirements.
Battleheart, designed for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch by Mika Mobile, is an action role playing game with knights, monks, witches, sorcerers, monsters and much more. The land has been besieged by a plague of terrible monsters and it is up to you to organize a special fighting squad to save them all and cleanse the land of evil! Gamezebo's Battleheart strategy guide and walkthrough will provide you with a quick start guide, tips, tricks, and hints on how to win.
By this point, we've all come to expect Gameloft's bigger games to pay homage to big-name console titles with their storylines, and Sacred Odyssey: The Rise of Ayden is no exception. The story is clearly based on the Legend of Zelda games, and it's not even afraid to admit it: Ayden's horses are named Miya and Moto (a nod to Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto). Overall it's not a bad clone, but the publisher should have spent a little more time trying to copy the quality of the popular Nintendo games, too.
When I first booted up Gamebook Adventures: An Assassin in Orlandes, I honestly wasn't quite sure what to expect. A game where players spend most of their time reading? In a lot of ways it sounded more like a homework assignment than a gaming experience. Needless to say I was both surprised and delight to find that An Assassin in Orlandes delivered one of the most engaging iOS gaming experiences I've had to date.
Combining twitch action dual-stick style gameplay with the classic hack'n'slash formula of games like Gauntlet and Torchlight, Crescent Moon Games' upcoming Pocket RPG is gearing up to take the App Store by storm.
