    The word 'epic' gets thrown around a lot these days, and it's starting to undermine what that word really means. Your Cheetos are not epic. That skateboarding porcupine, while adorable, is not epic. 'Epic' is a literary term used to describe a certain kind of story. One that takes us on a journey into a richly detailed universe; one that's existed long before we got there. And more often than not, the fate of the world is hanging in the balance.The Lord of the Rings is an epic. Star Wars is an epic. And this first chapter of The Banner Saga kicks off one of the finest interactive epics I've ever known."Set in a world of varls, humans and dredge, The Banner Saga can best be summed up as Tolkien by way of Scandinavia (if it were adapted by Don Bluth and Intelligent Systems). The developers at Stoic Studio have managed to blend these seemingly disparate influences together into something wonderfully original, creating a world that's even better than its gameplay.

    Here's a timely lesson straight from the just-ended holiday season: empty calories can taste really, really good. Sure, you might regret that extra helping of stuffing or second desert, but not while you're eating it. Glu Mobile's Eternity Warriors 3 is something like that, a gluttonous serving of free-to-play action-RPG carnage that provides little nutritional value but tempts you to keep coming back for more.At the risk of stretching that opening analogy to the breaking point, one of the ingredients in the Eternity Warriors 3 recipe is a story. That is, there's a reason you're taking your Warrior or Monk and pitting them against hordes of enemies in Diablo-esque fashion. It's just not that important. Consider it a garnish, there for presentation purposes only."The real meat is in hacking and slashing your way through dungeons, and the game gets you into the action quickly, teaching what you need to know along the way. The controls are simple, and despite my general disdain for virtual thumbsticks, this one is responsive enough to deal with the fast-paced combat. A large button handles basic attacks with smaller ones for skills, which draw down your mana and also have cooldown timers.There's nothing subtle about what you're asked to do in each level, which is eliminate undead, demons, wolves, and other monsters in the shortest possible time - and you're actually graded on how fast you can clear them all out. Mini-bosses in the final zone of most levels are a little tougher, and the actual bosses of the three kingdoms provide nice challenges. Mostly though, it's quantity over quality, putting your reflexes to the test against waves of enemies.

    Those of us old enough to remember playing the very first Dragon Warrior game on the NES can also remember giggling over the option to buy "Clothes" as a starter armor set for our hero. "What, was the hero naked before we bought the Clothes?" we asked each other.Of course, our 8-bit hero wasn't actually naked (or at least we couldn't see his shame because of the NES's graphical limitations and/or Nintendo's strict censorship policies at the time). However, the legacy of the naked hero continues with Legend of Equip Pants, an odd, odd adventure game fueled by jokes about underwear, shorts, and pantaloons."Legend of Equip Pants tells the complex tale of Sir Pantsalot, a knight living in a kingdom that's troubled by an "underwearwolf" (amongst other monsters based on garments that secure people's junk). Sir Pantsalot is noble and true, but he seemingly has problems with indecent exposure in a very pro-pants society. He sets out to find some manner of covering for his ding-dong, but his journey is destined to be difficult.Legend of Equip Pants is, in a word, silly. It tries very hard to be funny. The curious thing is it mostly succeeds, even though it retells the same joke over and over. Strange as it is to say, the game's juvenile themes just mesh well with its retro pixel-based graphics and solemn RPG soundtrack. You'll find yourself grinning even when you try and summon your inner grade three teacher ("Boogers, farts, and underwear are not funny!")

    The thing about most endless runners is that, by virtue of their very name, they tend to be endless. This can be a bit of a problem at times, particularly when there's a narrative by which the inevitable mark of failure can yield some rather grim implications. Oasis: Path to Redemption is not like that, however; a fact it proudly boasts as it promises a defined ending. That said, just because it has an ending (and five worlds to traverse in order to get there) doesn't mean that it is by any means easy.Oasis also favors itself as an RPG ("Action RPG Runner" in full), though this isn't really much the case; as you run along and take down one foe after another, you'll gain experience which you can use to acquire new skills, thus allowing you to progress even further… at least, in theory. Of course, so many games allow for experience and leveling up that those traits are hardly unique to RPGs any more, but that's getting off on another tangent."The idea behind Oasis is sound: Like most runners, the key to victory is in memorization, and by leveling up your skill set, you'll be able to progress even further with each new try until you ultimately reach the end (at which time you'll unlock a Mission Mode). Unfortunately, while the idea is sound, the execution is lacking in some areas.

    The final paragraphs of the gamebook Island of the Lizard King contain a scene I can still remember clearly today, nearly thirty years after I first read it. It stamped itself on my ten-year old brain because it seemed so hideous at the time. I'm made of sterner stuff today, and was positively anticipating re-living those climatic moments on my iPad.As a digital gamebook, you'll spend most of the time reading paragraphs of text and then being presented with a series of possible choices at the end. In this way, you work your own chosen path through a work of fiction. Occasionally you'll be called on to fight creatures or test one of your three statistics, all mediated by dice rolls with a slick and satisfying system.As the title suggests, the plot of this tale sees you travelling to a tropical island to search for, and hopefully dispatch, a deranged lizardman who's been terrorizing local populations with slave raids.

    I was disappointed to discover that in spite of all the pre-release promotion, The Gate has about as much to do with real-time strategy as Family Feud, and is in fact a straight-up collectible card battle game. But as I delved into it, I was also elated to learn that it's a really, really good CCG, quite possibly the best one I've played since I broke free of my Rage of Bahamut-habit."Combines Real Time Strategy and Training mechanics," the App Store entry for The Gate promises, and for a brief while I bought into it. Passing through the Gate into a hellish underworld filled with demons and wickedness, your only hope is to fight - and by fighting, your hope is sustained. As you move ever deeper into this sulphuric underworld, you'll acquire "Disciples" who you can train, upgrade, and evolve, and who will do battle on your behalf against both computer-controlled opponents and the forces of your fellow players. This is where the RTS component comes into play, as instead of simply a static, numbers-versus-numbers contest, battles are rendered entirely in 3D and filled with impressive visual effects."You move your characters by tapping and then dragging to where you want them to go, and unleash their skills in battle by tapping on icons at the top of the screen. To heal them, simply tap your healer - everybody has one - and then drag to the character in need. It's simple and reasonably intuitive, although the lack of a zoom control makes it difficult to select a Disciple in the heat of a crowded battle.But it's also almost entirely unnecessary thanks to the "auto" function that will control the demons in your army with a good degree of competence. It may not be quite as effective as handling the situation personally, especially at higher levels, but the "fire and forget" convenience is handy; and if you don't like how things are going, you can turn it off and assume direct control of the action at any time.
