    Real heroes fight with dice. That is to say, they roll up their attack numbers and then strike accordingly. They don't whip dice at monsters, which is an entertaining but ultimately ineffective spectacle.Tiny Dice Dungeon from Kongregate is a role-playing game with a battle system that utilizes the art of dice-throwing. You make your way across a monster-infested world, tame beasts to fight alongside you, rescue villagers, and call on Lady Luck as you roll dem bones. There's a lot to do, and like gambling, it's hellishly addictive. If it didn't rely so heavily on ill-suited free-to-play mechanics, it'd be one of the best RPGs available for mobile.Tiny Dice Dungeon takes place in a broken land that's been infested by hostile monsters. Humankind expanded outwards without much regard for the creatures living in the wilds, and said creatures pushed back in a big way. Now you must strike out and try to restore some semblance of peace to the world.

    On March 27th, developer 3 Sprockets launched Fight the Dragon on Steam Early Access. The top-down 3D dungeon crawler's main attraction was its allegedly super simple level editor which allows players to upload and share their creations. While level editors are not an uncommon sight in video games, 3 Sprockets have gone to lengths to ensure that their dungeon editor is seemingly the main feature of the game.  After creating my own dungeon from scratch in a little under two hours, I'm here to report back that making a dungeon is just as fun as playing through everyone else's.Turns out I'm not the only player to think so. In just two weeks, over 450 dungeons (nearing 480 at the time of this writing) have been generated by players and are now waiting to be discovered by other adventurous players.

    In my time spent sampling the many, many freemium flavors on the App Store I feel like I've gotten familiar with just about everything that's out there. And yet here I find myself somewhat smitten with Evolution: Battle for Utopia - a game that doesn't so much reinvent the wheel as it tries to be a whole bunch of different wheels all at once. The weird thing is it actually kind of works.While on a mission to colonize the planet Utopia, the Commander and his crew are shot down while landing and their escape pods scatter them across the land. A land filled with all sorts of very large and aggressive animals, nomadic scavengers, and plenty of other nasty hazards. The Commander will have to fight his way through hordes of enemies in order to reunite his crew, begin terraforming the planet, and start restoring order. And that's all within the first thirty minutes or so.

    There's a simple test to decide if Heroine's Quest is right for you.  If you played, enjoyed, and pined for more Quest for Glory games, you've passed the test.  You should be playing Heroine's Quest right now.  As a spiritual successor and homage to Sierra's RPG-slash-adventure series, Crystal Shard's modern installment feels right at home amidst its inspirations, and could easily slip into a library of their ranks unnoticed.  It brings with it a full-sized world and story, updated gameplay (a point-and-click engine, not the original text parser), and plenty of charm and tongue-in-cheek humor that would have matched wits with Sierra back in the day.Gamers unfamiliar with Quest for Glory may need a bit more direction in their decision tree.  Although Quest for Glory and Heroine's Quest look like standard point-and-click adventure games at first glance, this is far from the truth.  They are role-playing games, with random encounters, battles, side quests, armor, and skills to contend with.  Your Heroine will fight trolls, level up, grow hungry, agree to help villagers, sometimes fail to help villagers, and explore a large, open world.  Point-and-click adventuring still comes into play, though, and there is plenty of item collecting, puzzle solving, and dialogue-branching throughout the game's more active—and open-ended—quests.

    I hate the word 'roguelike.' Judging by the recent adoption of new phrases like 'YOLO' and 'procedural death labyrinth,' it seems I'm not alone in this (though it's not exactly like that last one rolls off the tongue, either). Regardless of how I feel about the terms we use to describe it though, I very much like what the genre represents: the challenge of outdoing your own personal best.Dungeon of the Endless is very much a roguelike at its heart - you'll face procedurally generated stages, plenty of treasure discovery, and permanent death - but it manages to bring something new to the genre that gives it a truly unique appeal: controlling multiple characters at once.Rather than controlling a single hero in a "fight or die" scenario, players start with two characters to swap between and will uncover more as they proceed deeper and deeper into the game. With different skillsets and upgrades, players will balance their time between both, employing tactics that will make or break them.But we're getting ahead of ourselves - I haven't even told you what Dungeon of the Endless is about!
