    Tired of candy, jewels, and cute animals in your puzzle games? Need something a little more exciting? Something like, I don't know, football? Part Time Evil hears your cries for more hard-hitting action in your puzzle games, but the indie studio isn't just stopping there. Its crowdfunded project Puzzle Football: Quest of the Gridiron takes things to another level by mixing in a heavy dose of RPG goodness too.Inspired by classic RPGs like the Final Fantasy series, old school football games like Tecmo Bowl, and even card-battle games, Puzzle Football has one of those "so crazy it just might work" types of high concepts. The idea is to build a team of players, complete with equipment that complements the style of play you have in mind.Out on the gridiron is where the puzzle element enters the equation. Below the playing field is a board full of tiles similar to the ones seen in puzzle games too numerous to mention. The difference here is that you'll be lining them up to enable your team to run short passes, long passes, or running plays, any of which can be boosted by power cards that can turn the tide when used judiciously. According to Matt Udvari, Lead Designer for Part Time Evil, a lot of thought went into how this intriguing mix of elements would work when combined together."The most challenging part of the puzzle aspect is making that affect your football plays in a very clear way," he said. "The player should know that the thing they do on the puzzle board makes things happen on the football field. From the beginning, I personally made it my goal to avoid moments of 'why did that just happen,' which I see a lot when I play puzzle games for fun. That's why we do a 'play breakdown' after each play that says why the play happened the way it did."

    It's been said that in space, no one can hear you scream. Supposedly it has something to do with science. But there can be echoes in space, at least according to Echo Prime, a sci-fi action game by Robot Entertainment. The echoes in this case are much cooler than simple reflections of sound, helping to make an otherwise run of the mill slash-and-blast fest into something a little more enjoyable.Though there's nothing immediately memorable about the protagonist of Echo Prime, he at least sports a character model that appeals to the little kid in all of us. Or as an actual little kid (my five-year-old son, to be specific) put it, "He looks like a guy in a robot suit with a gun and a sword!" His job is to set things right for humanity, or something of that nature, and fend off enemies called Slivers.The laser pistol and sword come in pretty handy for doing that, but the real alien-dispatching fun comes from Echoes, which are beings from another dimension who grant your hero special abilities thanks to a weakened barrier between planes. These can be passive or active and come in just about every flavor: simple buffs, heals, additional attacks, the whole enchilada.As your space warrior levels up, he can take more than one Echo into battle at a time, and they can be swapped out before each stage. On top of that, one extra Echo can be tapped into from another random player or a friend, adding both extra strategic options and an organic way to make the game more social. Other game developers, please take note.

Blending equal elements of resource-management and role playing gameplay, the iOS version will take everything that players know and love of King's League: Odyssey and make it shine for the touchscreen. The upcoming mobile release is said to completely revamp the world of the modest Flash game with sparkling HD graphics, and brand new mobile-exclusive content including additional dungeons, characters, enemies, and quests.In the game, players are tasked with training recruits from a number of medieval class systems, such as Lancers, Berserkers, and Hunters, as they set off to conquer enemy towns and cities to acquire new resources and make their name resound across the kingdoms. With each new town that players ransack, they'll be able to upgrade the strength of their training facilities, and as a result, level-up their units to hold their own in battle in the increasingly difficulty kingdom leagues. In addition to the main storyline, King's League: Odyssey also offers a handful of optional side quests, as well as the punishing Battlethon mode, which is certain to separate the boys from the kings!

    Mobage and free-to-play mobile games have been, and always will be, a thing. On the one hand it means we can pretty much know what to expect before ever loading up one of their titles. On the other hand, all that experience with F2P social game development puts them in a great position to try new things. Heroes & Havoc is one such new thing, for better and for worse.Since it's apparently impossible to develop a freemium fantasy-themed mobile game without a ridiculous story that takes itself way too seriously, Heroes & Havoc casts players in the role of a fallen angel exiled from the heavens for bringing magic to mortals. Then they must gather a band of powerful heroes and fight the gods in order to redeem themselves because "reasons." All joking aside, games like this are never really played for their story, anyway."Mechanically, Heroes & Havoc is a bizarre sort of not-quite CCG. Players gather up heroes, certainly, and they can level-up and learn new skills and spells, but there are no random draws or fusion/evolution elements. Instead, there are several areas (each belonging to a specific deity) that they must fight their way through. Completing all of the battles in one area will unlock a new hero, and that hero can then be powered-up by completing more challenging skirmishes in the same zone.

    Generally speaking, match-three gamers don't run with role-playing gamers or trading card gamers, but Gamevil, one of South Korea's largest mobile game publishers, plans to alter that. Aiming to make these mismates mingle, Gamevil brings us Spirit Stones, a new three-genre mash-up that bravely blends bits of match-three, bobs of RPG, and driblets of TCG. Although occasionally brought down by repetition and missing sound and interface elements, Spirit Stones basically blows the doors off, thanks to dynamic deck-building and habit-forming combat.In terms of narrative, Spirit Stones falls on the match-three end of the spectrum—meaning, there's not much of one. The context is a fairly predictable good-versus-evil kind of thing, with you being tasked with using the power of the Ancient Gods (the Spirit Stones) to save the kingdom of Dulaz (a place that really should be re-named "The Kingdom of Busty Women," by the look of its subjects). To attain these powerful stones, you must first fight your way through various lands, past all manner of hostile undesirables. Fortunately, you don't have to do it alone: you get to take a party of your bustiest—I mean trustiest, friends with you."All joking aside, it's hard not to notice the 'amplitude' of your warriors since Spirit Stones has enthusiastically embraced an aesthetic that's highly stripperific. Even so, each card displays a great-looking character that's beautifully rendered, and there are an amazing number of them. (Incidentally, characters, 90% of whom are female, are also rendered in battle as weird—and slightly disturbing—baby-faced-but-boobsy bobble-heads.) Credit should definitely be given since a lot of work was put into creating the gorgeous character art, not only for the base cards, but for their enhanced variants.(The game's sound on the other hand, could use some work. Battle result screens seem to be completely lacking music and sound, and the music loop during battle is nothing short of maddening.)

    D&D: Arena of War looks great, it sounds great, and who doesn't relish the idea of battling their way across the fabled Sword Coast of Faerun during the world-changing events of the Sundering? But in the end, it's a deep disappointment, brought low by the absence of one fundamental component necessary to any good D&D game: the actual D&D.My time with D&D: Arena of War did not start well, as the game struggled with a post-install asset download that took much longer than expected and timed out twice, but I started to feel some optimism once things got going. It's a tad cramped on an iPhone screen, but even so it looks fantastic; and while the initial character creation is dramatically simplified - you can select from a number of pre-made race/class combinations (although some of the more exotic combos must be unlocked before they can be used) and adjust gender, hair color, armor, and gauntlets - that's not necessarily surprising in a combat-focused mobile game.My excitement grew as I started to play. D&D: Arena of War is set on the Sword Coast, a region of Faerun that will be pleasingly familiar to veterans of the famed computer RPG Baldur's Gate. Your adventures begin with a simple quest against some Kobold troublemakers in Beregost, a town that makes an early appearance in Baldur's Gate, and I was very much looking forward to the opportunity to once again walk its streets.
