    Why does Sonic need a car to race? One must wonder if it's this inevitable, always-inane question that helped inspire the developers at Sumo Digital to create a game in which moving along the ground at high speeds is not always the key to victory. In Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, you'll not only need to master the fine art of automobile racing, but you'll also need to display dominance in soaring through the sky and riding the waves in order to succeed and capture the checkered flag.Of course, if you've managed to play the game on the PC or one of its many handheld and high-definition console releases from just over a year ago, then you already knew this. With that experience, you might think you know just what to expect from the new mobile release. And to a certain extent, you would be correct."At its very core, the mobile release of Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is the same as its previously-released brethren: You choose from one of a cast of SEGA (and other) characters and motor around various courses inspired by SEGA games from throughout the company's ages, using a multitude of zany Mario Kart-esque weapons to offset your opponents and take the lead over land, sea, and air. However, it's much of the framework around that core that differs in this version of the title.

    Sometimes it's smart just to recognize you've got a good thing going. Hothead Games has done that by expanding its Big Win series of sports games to all the major stick-and-ball sports. But just when it appeared there were no more ways to expand the brand, along comes Big Win Racing. It's the tried and true formula of light sports sim plus collectible card elements applied to stock car racing, and it adds up to something pretty good.Your climb to the top of this particular racing world starts out in humble fashion. A pack of starter cards gives your team a foundation, though it's not one you want to rely on for very long. Where the other Big Win titles revolve around building the best possible team of athletes, you obviously only have the driver and the car here (and some people don't consider drivers athletes, but that's a subject for another forum).Big Win Racing handles this dilemma smartly by taking both the pit crew and the parts that make up your race car into account. So while you want the best driver you can get, you also need steering, transmission, an engine and tires for your ride, along with six crew members (two tire carriers, two tire changers, a jackman and a gas man) to service it in the pits.

    Riiiiiiiiiiiidge Racer!With two decades and a ton of releases under its belt, Ridge Racer is one of the golden standards in the realm of arcade racing games, and Ridge Racer Slipstream is no different. The latest installment in the series brings what you would expect from the folks at Namco Bandai with regards to the series, including lovely graphics, tight controls, a catchy soundtrack, and of course, appearances by Reiko Nagase, the Ridge Racer racing queen herself. The premise is simple, and as old as time itself: Take control of one of a number of top-of-the-line automotive vehicles and gun it down the track as quickly as possible, outracing the competition and crossing the finish line either first, or with the best time. Of course, you'll need more than just the ability to drop a lead foot down on the gas to win; as with many an arcade-style racing game, drifting around sharp turns and tight corners is essential. Plus, when the chips are down, you might still be able to call upon the surge of speed provided by a nitro-charged turbo boost.One key element, though, is the one from which this particular iteration takes its name: The slipstream. Trailing behind an opponent and using their speed to boost your own is a key mechanic this time out, complete with an assortment of several "perks" dedicated to either maximizing your slipstream potential, or shutting down that of your opponents.

    Back in the days when indie games on Steam were young and full of promise, there was one game that all of my friends insisted I purchase: Trials 2: Second Edition. I was never one for motocross, and everything I'd heard about the game made it sound blisteringly difficult to control; but it looked a little like ExciteBike, and that was enough pique my curiosity. Between that and the peer pressure I'd received from other gamers, I finally gave in.And I was really glad I did.Trials 2 was hard to control, but by design, not discomfort. It was about master balance while making your way around some crazy obstacles, and no matter how hard it got, you never wanted to let a level beat you.

    Angry Birds helped us fall in love with the physics of speed all over again. Bad Piggies taught us how much fun could be had with pigs on wheels. With titles like these in the series past, I suppose an Angry Birds kart racer was inevitable.But while thematically a fit, Angry Birds Go! is a pretty big break from what Rovio has brought us in the past. It's their first game with 3D modelling. It's their first game in an established genre that the console crowd would get eager about. It is, as much as can be for one of the biggest names in mobile gaming, something of a gamble. And while I've been having a lot of fun with it, I don't think it quite hits the high mark that Rovio might have hoped. At the start of every race, players will pull back on their slingshot (a nice nod to the original game) and shoot their racer onto the track. From there the game becomes an exercise in overly-simplified design. Player don't need to worry about braking or accelerating. Drifting isn't (much of) a thing. There are no item boxes to break, and in many of the game's challenges, not even other racers to compete against. In all honesty, the game could have been called Angry Birds: Steering isn't too much for you, is it? If so, we're really sorry and will take it out in a future update.
