Pepper Panic Saga is yet another match-three puzzle game from the creators of Candy Crush Saga that'll steal your leisure hours by the handful. It's as addictive as sriracha on pancakes (what? Am in the only one who does that?).Pepper Panic Saga stars Pepper, a young pup with a curious appetite for hot stuff. Whereas his colleagues spend their days digging up and munching on bones, Pepper is more interested in finding the plumpest peppers nature has to offer. He eventually leaves his doggy life to pursue a career growing peppers.Obviously, dogs aren't good farmers, so you need to help Pepper grow his crops. When you match up three same-colored peppers on a level, it grows into a larger pepper. When you grow any pepper past its third stage, it explodes, scatters its searing seeds across the board, and grows all peppers of the same color by one more stage. If you're lucky, the chain of growth and explosion may trigger a Pepper Panic that racks up huge points, and is frankly just satisfying as heck to experience.

"It's the 'height of all word banks,' basically, an artifact from which all man got the idea about how to use words. It's something of an origin story for a world, which is always a neat concept to start with. This coveted book has been lost to time, and who knows who actually has it? That's one of your goals during the story - to find out."Apexicon is also the title of a new game being developed by Meyer's indie studio that's now wending its way through Kickstarter. A "puzzle RPG with a focus on story, combat, and world-building," Apexicon challenges you to battle enemies by creating words from a Boggle-style board of jumbled letters. But it's meant to be more than just a word-search game, as the plan for the full release includes town management, NPCs, customizable characters, leveled equipment, cross-platform saves, and more."Meyer cites Puzzle Quest, Scrabble and Bookworm Adventures as inspirations for Apexicon, but said he was after something a little bit different when he began work on the game. "I knew that there were a lot of match-3 games out there, and while I enjoyed them, I hadn't seen a real take on making words out of a large board for quite some time," he said. "I knew it was perfect for mobiles, as touching the screen would be child's play. Making it on PC seemed the right thing to do as well, and the idea to swap saves between the two became a big feature focus."

    The new trend in match-three games is to draw lines through matching icons rather than shifting their positions. This interesting evolution not only gives players a new way to enjoy matching three, but it challenges them to solve similar issues by distinctly different means. Pocket Playlab's free-to-play Juice Cubes embraces the trend in hopes of attracting some of the Candy Crush Saga crowd; unfortunately, it fails to convince us that fruit is better for you than candy.Juice Cubes (which I keep wanting to call "Juicy Fruit") is born of a collaboration between Rovio Stars, the publishing arm of Rovio Entertainment (known for the Angry Birds franchise) and Pocket Playlab, the makers of another cube-themed game, Lost Cubes. (Fans of Lost Cubes, be warned—Juice Cubes' gameplay is completely different.) It's set among a series of small islands inhabited by things like sentient hermit crabs, pirates, and giant octopi, and these nautical natives all have one thing in common—they have problems. In their fancifully fluid world, those problems are solved by clearing levels using an easy-to-learn match-three technique, and who better to do that than you?"As mentioned before, Juice Cubes employs a match-three method wherein you connect static icons by drawing lines through them. The nine-by-nine board is covered with apples, strawberries, bananas, and coconuts and these can be connected vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. As "match-three" implies, matches require three or more of the same icon; matched icons burst, allowing the remaining ones to cascade toward the bottom of the screen. Unlike other games in the genre, in Juice Cubes there's no such thing as automatic matching, so cascades do nothing but rearrange the board. This makes for slightly different gameplay, but also eliminates the possibility of achieving the explosive random combo-chains achievable in games like Bejeweled and Candy Crush.

    Tower defense games are well on their way to being as overused as endless runners, but this month Big Fish brings us another—the aptly-named, free-to-play zombie killer Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! Hoping to conquer the unpredictable social game genre, developer Game Forest succeeds in creating some amusingly chaotic, survival-style gameplay. Once things become more challenging though, they fail to make the free-to-play fun last long enough.There's always something that turns ordinary people into rabid, brain-munching monsters, and in Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! it's a space rock that falls from the sky. This glowing boulder lands in the desert where the military quickly transforms its desolate landing site into a high-security research lab. As happens so often at such facilities, something goes terribly wrong. The rock infects everyone there and soon after, scientists, soldiers, and lab technicians pour from the compound, googly-eyed and drooling. Your job—along with two of your most enthusiastic gun-toting friends—is to take each and every one of them out.Zombie! Zombie! Zombie! is played from a top-down perspective with a three person squad located at the bottom of the screen. The zombies approach from the top through rubble-filled city streets, over train tracks and across bridges, and you pick them off with standard-issue machine guns. It's pretty straightforward, but the game does offer an interesting twist in its unusual approach to match-three. Match-three here is much more organic, and completely avoids the whole colored icon/grid idea. It also eschews the notion of swapping icons and instead employs a uniquely dynamic method of matching three.

    Nature needed a palatable, easily-digestible meal for its carnivores, so it designed the bunny rabbit. That's not to say rabbits sit around and wait to be eaten. Anyone familiar with Watership Down knows the lapin race has its own blessings, including the ability to murder vegetable gardens with blood-chilling efficiency. Stack Rabbit is an action/match-three puzzle game about a rabbit that cuts down garden after garden (vegans: Viewer discretion is advised). This tasty little turnip from Disney is unique and highly addictive, though like the less healthy Candy Crush Saga, later levels of Stack Rabbitare obviously engineered to gobble up your lives in hopes that you'll buy more.    Stack Rabbit's starring bunny is Ben, a fluffy white hopper who's been charged with babysitting his brother's kids. Thing is, Ben's brother evidently did not stop making it with his wife long enough to even breathe, and now there are a lot of hungry little mouths for Ben to feed. Luckily, there's a nearby farm with lots of vegetable plots ripe for raiding. Stack Rabbit's levels are set up on a grid. Most of the grid spaces are occupied by a vegetable, or by a sprout. When Ben hops into a fully-grown vegetable, he flings it upon his head (he's got a square head, and these are square vegetables). When he matches three or more identical vegetables, they go towards the total he needs to collect in order to move on to the next patch.There are conditions to collecting, though. Foremost, each patch is guarded by a dog that's not big on the idea of rabbits frolicking in his master's vegetable patches. Said pooch spends most of his time snoozing, but there's an alarm clock that goes off after a certain amount of moves, so Ben needs to do his thing before that happens. Every time you make a match, the move counter ticks down by one. The kicker is that most levels require you to collect vegetables in a certain order. So if the game calls for eggplants and you collect tomatoes, those tomatoes don't count towards your level progress.
