What do you get when you combine a hostage in a cage, unsteady towers of blocks, and fresh fruit? When you come from San Francisco — like me — it sounds like someone is asking a question that could lead to a very interesting evening. In the case of Bring Me Down, this is the setup that you're thrust into, and the end result is a game that's much like just such the aforementioned evening: challenging, but probably not for everyone.
I've sincerely lost track as to how many match-3 games I've played over the years. It's seriously a ton. In the lead-up to playing through7 Wonders: Magical Mystery Tour,my editor told me she had another match-3 game for me if I wasn't sick of them yet. Honestly, I should be - but I'm actually quite the opposite. Sure, it's a well-tread genre, but when match-3 games are done well they can be super compelling. Magical Mystery Tour is one of those games.
Ideateca's Sumon is a math-based spin on puzzle games that goes far beyond the bounds of your usual match-3 gameplay. In Sumon, players need to add up blocks on a field numbered from one to nine so that they equal a randomly chosen target number, usually between 11 and 15. Where most puzzle games online ask you to match blocks that are adjacent to each other somehow, Sumon encourages players to match blocks regardless of where they are on the field. In fact, the farther away the blocks are when you match them, the better your score.
Being a kid's pet fish is a lot more dangerous than you might think. True story: my sister —when she was three— tried to suck up my brother's goldfish with a bike horn. That poor little guy got off easy though compared to Yello, the new protagonist/victim of Tactile Entertainment's upcoming physics puzzler Saving Yello.
When done right, genre mash-ups can create some incredible games. Just take a look at Puzzle Quest or Quarrel. Tiny Token Empires, a new mash-up from developer BiP media, joins their ranks with ease. It's like someone took Puzzle Quest, Risk, and Civilization, put them in a blender, and set it to awesome.
Oh match-3 games, how can you be so addicting even though you all basically play the same way? It seems no matter how many of them I play I just keep getting sucked in over and over.Cradle of Egyptis really no different; in fact it's very much the same, actually. But in spite of it really just retreading familiar territory (or maybe because of it), I found myself once again sinking more than a few hours into the game.
Let's be honest about something: If you ever owned a hamster (or any other small rodent), there was a least one time when you fantasized about dressing them up in little outfits and making them look even more adorable than they already were. Don't even bother trying to deny this— we all did it. Of course, 99% of us weren't able to take these dreams any further than idly sketching them out on paper, but the new game Hamster Cannon provides an opportunity to see just what said hamsters would've looked like in goofy little outfits… and then, y'know, shot out of an equally tiny cannon.
