Since Bejeweled Blitz took the Facebook world by storm, puzzle games on the platform have largely become formulaic. And Bayou Blast isn't an exception. It features bite-sized, minute long gameplay sessions combined with fun power-ups and a charming, colorful presentation. Thankfully, it also includes a somewhat novel twist on the standard match-3 formula to make it a viable alternative to the glut of Facebook puzzlers.
What is there that can be said about another Bejeweled Blitz-style match-3 game on Faceboo? You know the drill by now. Booty Quest is a solid clone, to be sure, though the colored gems you'll be matching while you're playing make it clear just how much this game was inspired by Popcap's puzzle hit. In fact, the only significant difference between Booty Quest and the multitude of match-3 games on Facebook is that you have 90 seconds to rack up a high score as opposed to 60. It feels more like an additional mode for Bejeweled than it does a new game experience.
Following closely in the path blazed by Angry Birds, Shoot the Apple is a physics-based puzzle game that starts off easy but grows increasingly difficult as players dig ever deeper into its many levels. But it lacks both the charm of the world's most famous object-flinger and its multi-layered complexity; it's an amusing but easily forgettable diversion that probably won't hold pride of place on the homescreen of anyone's mobile for very long.

Telling me that someone's made fundamental changes to Tetris is likely to make me black out in anger. It's such a stalwart game and an institution that mucking around with it would be akin to colorizing Citizen Kane or changing Star Wars (ok, bad example). But truth be told, Tetris' earlier move to touch devices hadn't exactly been smooth, and changes were needed to make it enjoyable. This latest version succeeds enormously on that front, though with a huge caveat.
Much like Puzzle Quest before it, the upcoming Jewel Story on Facebook is attempting to spice up the Bejeweled formula with added role playing and strategy elements. You still match jewels into groups of three or more, but you'll also be venturing out on an epic fantasy adventure, taking on quests and customizing your own character.
What do you get when you mix jigsaw puzzles with arcade action? Puzzle Adventures from Ravensburger Digital. Though its generic title might do little to pique the interest of social gamers, this is definitely one Facebook experience you won't want to miss.
