    What Games Are’s Tadhg Kelly talks microconsoles [interview]

    The OUYA's Kickstarter campaign hit its lofty $950,000 goal in only eight hours. The Gamestick, a competitor to the OUYA, had no trouble reaching its goal, either. Not long after, both Valve and Nvidia announced they would be releasing devices that simplified the process of playing PC games on a TV. Change is coming soon to the console market, and based on everything mentioned above, it's clear microconsoles will be leading the charge. To learn more about what we as consumers can expect in the months and years ahead, we reached out to Tadhg Kelly, author of the What Games Are blog and creative director at Jawfish Games.

    New OUYA console to be released annually

    OUYA CEO Julie Ehrman revealed in an interview with Engadget that a new OUYA console will release annually. The goal is to constantly iterate on the hardware and take advantage of new technology as it releases - the recently announced Tegra 4 chip being a prime example. So be on the lookout for the OUYA 20, which should release sometime in 2033.

    The folks behind the OUYA announced earlier today that the Android-based console will be available later this year in select retail locations. This comes as a bit of a surprise given its origins on Kickstarter, but it's good news all the same. Developers will likely have a wider audience to peddle their wares to, and those who missed out on the Kickstarter can pick up the console without much trouble.

    Living room gaming will no doubt change quite a bit over the next few years. Sony and Microsoft will release their new consoles, sure, but they'll be up against a whole new cast of competitors, such as Android-based consoles like the OUYA and the forthcoming third- and first-party Steam Boxes. And while Microsoft and Sony are surely quivering in their boots at the potential of the Steam Box, the feeling isn't necessary mutual: as far as Valve co-founder Gabe Newell is concerned, the real threat here is Apple.

    The Ouya console isn't expected to ship for another few months, but that hasn't stopped a competitor from entering the ring. A company called GameStick has launched a Kickstarter campaign for an open-source Android console called—appropriately enough—the GameStick. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets.
