    Microsoft looks to take on the iPad with Microsoft Surface

    The press conference Microsoft held yesterday was mired in ambiguity. For starters, they didn't reveal the location of the event until the morning of. Despite this lack of detail, many were quick -- and ultimately correct -- to predict that they were going to announce a new tablet. Called Microsoft Surface, it features a 10.6 inch display, a built-in kickstand, and a truckload of other interesting features.

    Growing up in a house where daddy's job is all about video games, my two daughters really couldn't avoid the fun of digital play even if they wanted to. As a parent, that means a lot of time is spent searching the recesses of my mind trying to think of games that are not only age appropriate, but genuinely fun. On a lark, this meant stopping by my local games shop last week to pick up a copy of Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise for the Xbox 360.

    It's not easy to admit defeat, but with a recent quartet of releases on the App Store, it really seems like Microsoft is trying to tell us something. In the last six days, the big M brought three non-games to the iPhone and iPad - the official My Xbox LIVE app, the Halo: Reach companion app Halo Waypoint, and a gorgeous new rendition of Microsoft OneNote. Now they've just debut their first iOS game - a port of the Windows Phone 7 version of Kinectimals. Has Microsoft finally seen the light?

    Monday Morning QB: Microsoft finally announces Windows App Store, but is it little, too late?

    Microsoft finally announced they are launching their own iTunes-competitor for PC apps within its upcoming Windows 8 operating system (see related article: Gamasutra). The Windows App Store is slated to be released in beta in February 2012, and will allow users to buy games, apps, ebooks, digital magazines, within app, subscriptions, and in app purchases. But is it a case of too little, too late? In the past, Microsoft was successful using its monopoly in the Windows OS to buy, copy, and cheat it's way to win in new markets.

    Back in March 2010 when Yahoo! announced a distribution partnership with Zynga, I speculated it would takes months for the deal to come to fruition. Nine months later, two of Zynga games are finally up and running on Yahoo! Yahoo! has launched and integrated Mafia Warsand FishVille on a variety of Yahoo! properties, including Yahoo! Pulse, Yahoo! Mail, Yahoo! Messenger, and of course, Yahoo! Games.
