    Columbus, the protagonist of DreaminGame's Era of Sail, is a plucky little chap. Only moments after he's discovered bobbing amid the wreckage of a ship, he's already throwing his weight around the local port in his role of port manager, criticizing the dilapidated mills and lack of commerce. But rather than just grumbling about it, he immediately sets off to remedy the issues. We could use more people like him.

Silver Maple Games is trying to keep this from becoming a rhetorical question by releasing Slot Galaxy later this month, getting players with iOS devices to conquer machines from multiple planets in a social slots jaunt through the final frontier.

    Imagine it's 1982.  You walk into an arcade and there are dozens of stand-up machines blinking away in the dim light.  You have a pocketful of quarters and an afternoon to kill.  Among these machines you see a game called Blind Man's Dungeon.  The demo blinks away in front of you: a pixelated adventurer traverses the screen in wide circles, collecting treasure and vanquishing foes while a little fairy builds walls.  "Interesting," you think, and pop in a quarter.

    Love them or hate them, it seems pretty certain that social games are here to stay. Over the last few years, we've seen more and more traditional gaming companies embrace the world of social gaming - though I don't think any of us expected to see this company make the jump. Cave - the developer behind crazy "bullet hell" shooters like Bug Princess and Deathsmiles, have just announced that they're going to focus less on their hardcore audience and more on a social one.

    There's a huge market on virtually all platforms for nostalgic retro RPGs that emulate the look and feel of Super Nintendo classics like Final Fantasy II (called IV, these days). Kemco Games's Symphony of Eternity is trying to bring that sort of gameplay to Android handsets and almost succeeds. The actual game content for Symphony of Eternity is completely fine, if a bit on the predictable side and at times poorly-localized. Symphon of Eternity's downfall is in its technical implementation, where bugs can render the game unplayable on some handsets.

    While publishers may be quick to entice developers to dabble in new markets, building games for a whole new audience can be tricky. What works well in the US might flop in Korea, and vice versa. As such, there's a certain amount of risk that goes into looking beyond one's borders. Korean entertainment giant CJ E&M is a company have decided to take that risk, releasing the action RPG Samurai Girl to the western audiences just last month.
