    Haven't heard of Skylanders? You must not be a parent, then. This past holiday season they became the biggest thing since Pokemon. A neat mixing of real world toys and video games, players could purchase plastic characters that could then be accessed in-game by placing them on an accessory called the "portal of power." It's pretty ingenious, really - and the game is plenty of fun, too. Soon iOS gamers will get a taste of this world thanks to the upcoming Skylanders Cloud Patrol.

    The text-based social RPG is old. That isn't to say the genre doesn't have merit or a fan base, but in a time when mobile games are becoming increasingly more creative, titles like iMob 2 just don't stand out. Not that the latest creation from Addmired is bad; it simply doesn't offer anything to entice newcomers to the genre. Still, it's solid from a play perspective, with only a few minor nuances, such as some balancing issues.

    With Empires & Allies, Zynga essentially took the CityVille template and added combat to it. And with Battle Nations, developer Z2Live has done something very similar. In a lot of ways it's Trade Nations with turn-based combat. You still build up a city, harvest resources, and create goods. Only now you have to deal with training troops and defending your territory as well. It doesn't have the deepest city building mechanic, and the simplified combat leaves something to be desired, but when put together the two halves make for a largely enjoyable experience.

    Here's a pretty original title to check out on iOS: Amazing Breaker, from the developer Dekovir. A puzzle game that is deceptively simple looking, it is an app that easily satisfies the player's itch for a challenge. On top of this, its slick visuals and beautiful art style make for some gratifyingly high-quality destruction as users catapult bombs into various crystalline designs.

    Hollywood needs to either stop making tie-in games for its movies, or it needs to step things up. A lot. There are a lot of great films that get crummy-to-mediocre adaptations, designed to nab as much money as possible with a minimal amount of effort. The latest example of this is In Time for the iPhone, which is so mediocre that it almost feels remarkable.

    Text-based social games have been around for a few years now, with many of them modeled after the successful Facebook game of Mafia Wars. A newer game for iOS named Please Stay Calm, however, is taking that formula and weaving it into a location-based style of play. Combining several familiar gameplay mechanics, it connects users together and tasks them with surviving the frequently used "zombie apocalypse." Developed by Massive Damage, the game offers many good ideas, even if they sometimes feel a bit unrefined.
