The past holds endless fascination for people with fanciful dispositions and so hidden object games often embrace what many of us see as more elegant times than our own. Timeless: The Forgotten Town capitalizes on that antiquarian inclination, taking us back a hundred years to save a rustic village enslaved by an evil magician. While not offering us the most original game concept, its slick design and high-end graphics do good justice to some well-worn conventions.

Tales of Lagoona: Orphans of the Ocean follows Islabelle, a mermaid with a single goal of preventing the run-down Coral Bay orphanage from being leveled and turned into an underwater shopping mall. You're there every step of the way to help Islabelle achieve that goal, as you sell the orphanage's many treasures to earn money for upgrades. With an in-depth, charming storyline and plenty of mini-game variety, Tales of Lagoona makes a splash in the hidden object space, even for its few faults.
If there was a seminar on how to make a bad hidden object game, it would go something like this: "Create a vague storyline with generic characters and put them in an indeterminate setting. Have one of them vanish. Move things along using no sound and bland, static images. Finish things up by alternating between poorly-executed hidden object sequences and boring, repetitious puzzles. I'm thinking the makers of Silent Evil: Kate's Rescue must have attended this seminar—heck, maybe they taught it.
