    We just told you about the announcement of Google Play, but it seems like the company's mobile service isn't going to be having all the fun. Today the company announced plans to unify its online gaming presence as well, pulling Google+ titles, browser-based games, Android and more into one central location.

    Apple takes a bite out of Chomp to solve its app discovery problem

    Chomp was created to be acquired by Apple. One, the company is named Chomp, meaning that in the event of being bought by Apple, journalists like myself would have a field day with the puns (hence, my clever title). Two, Chomp's product is a Google for apps, for iOS and, more recently, Android.Given the challenges of finding apps in Apple's increasingly burgeoing App Store, it only seems natural to learn that Apple has acquired Chomp (as initially reported by Techcrunch) to the tune of $50 million.

    Microsoft finally announced they are launching their own iTunes-competitor for PC apps within its upcoming Windows 8 operating system (see related article: Gamasutra). The Windows App Store is slated to be released in beta in February 2012, and will allow users to buy games, apps, ebooks, digital magazines, within app, subscriptions, and in app purchases. But is it a case of too little, too late? In the past, Microsoft was successful using its monopoly in the Windows OS to buy, copy, and cheat it's way to win in new markets.

    Yesterday's launch of Mafia Wars 2 on Facebook was big news for Zynga, but even bigger seems to be the news that the game has now come to Google+ a mere 24 hours later. As a network that's been slow to add new games to their roster, getting a brand new big name release at launch is something of a coup for the growing platform - and it definitely seems to say something about Zynga's hopes for Google+.

    I will write about your campaign though. Over the past day, Gamezebo has been inundated by requests to purchase SuperPoke Pets from Google to keep the game running. Based on conversations with other companies, I am not the only one getting these requests.The answer is, no, we can't buy the game from Google and keep it running. I know, I have the reputation of being a high roller, but if Google can't afford to keep it running, Gamezebo can't as well. Having said that, I have to give the players behind this campaign credit for their enthusiasm. Truth is, some company they spam may be enticed to purchase the game from Google. They should be able to acquire the game and all of Slides assets for a penny -- literally.

    Last April, when Google bought Slide, I implied that it was a stupid acquisition (I'm a nice guy, so I nicely said they over-paid).The new bosses at Google must agree with me, because as of last night, Slide is no more. As reported to AllThingsD, Google has shut down Slide and its founder Max Levchin is leaving company, presumably to start his next company.Included in the list of shut down projects is the semi-popular game SuperPoke Friends as well as a bunch of non-related social app projects.
