    There's money to be made in China, but western game developers haven't had the best luck making it. Part of this can be attributed to China's stance towards video games, but according to James Gwertzman, PopCap's Head of Strategic Development, some of the problem also lies with how western developers approach the market in the first place. In a GDC talk titled "OMG! Zombies on the Great Wall of China," Gwertzman discussed PopCap's massive success with Plants vs. Zombies in China, as well as how developers can fare better in the country.

    A recent survey conducted by the Game Developer's Conference brought forth some interesting statistics about the current state of game development. Over 2,500 developers were polled, all of which either attended last year's GDC or plan to attend this year. Of everyone polled, 53% labeled themselves as indie developers. And while the definition of an indie developer is sometimes debated, 46% of those polled said they worked at a company of ten or less, with only 24% working with a publisher to release their last game. It doesn't get much more indie than that!

    It wasn't so long ago that smartphone/tablet games were considered a passing phase - not to mention inferior to games on dedicated mobile gaming platforms (which is a shame because that version of Snake on old Nokia phones was awesome). But things have changed a lot since then, and in fact smartphone/tablet games have popped up in the "Best Mobile/Handheld Game" category of the Game Developer's Choice Awards four years in a row now. This year, it's The Room and Hero Academy.
