Baseball Heroes Review
Most of us will never know what it feels like to blast the game-winning home run, soak in the adulation of the fans, and make the media wonder if we just did it without "help." But we can get a pretty decent simulation of those first two experiences with Baseball Heroes, a free Facebook game from Korean studio Syntasia. So put on your cleats, mind the pine tar and swing for the fences.
Rubber Tacos Preview
I had a bone to pick with the developers of Rubber Tacos. I calmly walked up to their section of the Zynga Unleashed event, practicing the words in my head: "A taco made of rubber sounds disgusting, and you're all bad people." As I drew closer, I noticed a screen looping the trailer, showing the antics of a cute little animated Luchador family. It was at that exact moment my heart grew two sizes.
ChefVille Preview
Regardless of whether or not you're a fan of cooking, I think we can all agree that good food is awesome. Were such a thing not true, channels like The Food Network would cease to exist, and we'd stop fawning over celebrity chefs. Oh, and Zynga probably wouldn't have announced a game called ChefVille at their Unleashed event. But they did, so I've now proven with horrible, disjointed logic that we all love food.
The Ville Preview
Despite gaming's steady direction forward, things also tend to operate in a circular motion. A game or genre that people once loved can fade into obscurity, only to undergo an incredible renaissance years down the road. This structure provides developers a chance to return to their roots, and provide innovations and improvements that weren't possible the first time around. Such is the case with Zynga's The Ville, a game that modernizes Zynga's older title YoVille.
Monster Paradise Review
The first time I tried a digital collectible card game (or whatever the proper term for the genre is), I had very low expectations yet quickly found myself ensnared by the admittedly Pavlovian gameplay, and I continue to tap for rewards to this very day. But Monster Paradise, despite excellent production values and a powerful, irresistibly cute Pokemon aesthetic, leaves me cold. It's not necessarily a bad game, it's just not particularly necessary.
SimCity Social Review
When EA first announced SimCity Social, it was hard to not get a little excited. "Finally," we thought, "a city-builder with depth and strategy and meaningful choices is coming to Facebook." And based on the statements being pushed out by EA and Playfish at the time, it seemed like they were ready to deliver on that promise. Now that it's here, though, that simply isn't the case.
