    As far as first-person shooters go, the TimeSplitters series is by far one of the coolest. Instead of limiting itself to one cool shooter theme, such as sci-fi, modern, or old western, TimeSplitters did something genuinely cool - took all of those genres and wrapped them up into one awesome time-travelling game. Despite meeting near-universal acclaim, however, the series has remained untouched for nearly seven years.

    Apologies for the delay on this one. A casualty of the E3 rush, this piece of news got lost in the Gamezebo file folder for a couple of days. Which as we all know in internet time is approximately seven hundred years. Which, coincidentally, is how long you'll be spending playing Star Wars: The Old Republic now that it's gone completely free-to-play for the first fifteen levels! See what I did there?

    I'll be honest. There isn't a whole lot at this year's E3 that has blown me away. Or even impressed me for that matter. So when Andrew Goulding - founder of Australian developer Brawesome, and all around good guy - e-mailed me promising some interesting news from the indie front, I immediately reported for listening duty. Like many App Store developers, Brawesome will be tweaking the prices of their two major releases. Unlike many, however? They're bumping them up.

    In the midst of the company's continued growth, megapublisher of free-to-play massive-multiplayer titles Aeria Games announced today the formal beta launch of Ignite, a new digital distribution platform they're calling the "first of its kind." Acting as a central hub for play and social networking, Ignite is being pitched as a Steam of sorts for the burgeoning genre of online fantasy, action, and multiplayer experiences.

    It seems like Diablo III is destined to be haunted until Blizzard finally releases it. The action role-playing sequel took over five years to pin itself at a May 15th release date. Then, shortly afterward, they announced that PvP wouldn't be able to make that date in time. Now, in what is hopefully a final blunder for Blizzard leading up to next month's release, it seems that a potential free-to-play "Starter Edition" was inadvertently leaked this morning.

    Here's something to think about. Video games have been around for decades, but their burst of mainstream popularity is only a few years old. Why is that? What is it about this generation of video games that gave rise to reams of casual fare? The answer is multi-tiered, but according to recent survey findings, the economic downturn of the late Aughts did a great deal to bring a much wider audience to the relatively cheap pastime of gaming. Moreover, the rise of the free-to-play market, its subsequent success, and the chilly economy all tie into each other in a big way.
