Barn Voyage Review: Don’t Say “Bon Voyage” to Farming Sims Just Yet
By Nadia Oxford
With the decline of Zynga and the deflation of FarmVille‘s popularity, farming sim games are becoming rarer than actual family-run farms. They’re not extinct by any means, however, and Barn Voyage by Fun+ demonstrates it’s still fun to harvest crops …FarmVille 2: Country Escape Walkthrough

Along with death and taxes, the only other certainty in life is that casual gamers love farming. It's a good thing too, because otherwise Zynga's FarmVille 2: Country Escape would be showing up unfashionably late to a party the company started itself with FarmVille back in the halcyon days of Facebook gaming. As it is, this fully mobile installment has much improved graphics and a fair bit of charm, but at the expense of the creative freedom that made the original such a monster hit. This is the part where I'd usually go into the setting and object of the game, but this one should require little explanation. You've got a family farm to fix up, so you've got to get busy growing crops and harvesting resources from plants and animals, most of which can be crafted into more complicated and lucrative products at the appropriate stations: the dairy churns out milk products, the windmill can grind grain into flour, etc.Pocket Harvest Review

It's becoming more and more difficult to write about Kairosoft games. The main issue is that they all sort of blur into one after a while - go and read any other Kairosoft review on Gamezebo, and you'll already have a great idea of how Kairosoft's new game Pocket Harvest works. Just replace the theme of the review with farming, and you're away.Kairosoft used to have a great thing going for it, with charming, easy-to-understand management sims that were as expansive as they were exciting. All these years later, and Kairosoft still has the very same thing - except that the excitement has well and truly dropped off. When you've played the exact same game over and over again, simply with a new skin each time, enjoyment levels really start to wane."Pocket Harvest is the worst example yet. You're presented with an isometric grid, on which you can play with fields, paths, and buildings. By planting crops in the fields, filling the houses with workers, and placing down all sorts of tourist attractions, your goal is to build up your cash reserves, buy the surrounding land, and become the most lucrative farm in the world.Everything here is the hallmark of a great Kairosoft game. You've got workers who potter around, planting seeds and digging up tomatoes, carrots, and the like; There's tourists who can't wait to buy a fruit juice and see the sights and smells your farm has to offer; And fun little animations that play along the bottom of the screen to show how a worker is progressing towards all forms of expansion.Farm Story 2 Review

Farming is a wholesome job, but it can also be soul-shattering. Every day, farmers deal with pests, rodents, bad weather, and crippling debt—and they return to the job with every sunrise because the world needs to be fed. In the same vein, digital farming brings downfalls of its own, including long wait times and brainless screen-tapping. Still, like the underappreciated real-world farmer, we return to our tasks. Not because they're necessary, but because games like Farm Story 2 are comforting in their predictability.Farm Story 2 puts you in charge of an unproductive farm. It's your job to fill it up with farm-y things, like crops, cows, and shops. You earn money for delivering vegetables, eggs, milk, and other products. That money goes back into improving your farm. It's the circle of farming life."Farm Story 2 involves a lot of tapping and dragging. You purchase plots of land from the market, and tap to lay them down. You tap to plant your crops. When it's time to harvest, you drag your scythe across your rows of wheat and corn. This simple gesture is surprisingly fun to perform: There's something satisfying about harvesting a whole crop in a bare second.Similarly, you collect products from your animal friends by dragging bucket icons over their pens. Once you've collected, the animals literally stiffen and collapse, and they won't produce until you feed them. It's a silly animation, but you'll smile the first time you see it.Farm Story 2 Walkthrough

In the real world, if a human being were to inexplicably fall into a land of animals that quickly put him or her to work, that human would have a serious problem. But in the world of social gaming, that's simply business as usual. Fantastic Forest by Wooga kicks off with a similar example of human servitude, an immediate warning that this social game offers little originality beyond its cute visuals.
