3 Industry Lessons from GDC 2012
By Eli Cymet
Last week, Josh and I were lucky enough to attend this year's Game Developer's Conference in San Francisco. Held at the Moscone Center in the heart of downtown, GDC is the world's largest professionally-focused video game event - and a hell of a good time. Besides some excellent networking, and some post-"networking" hangovers, the week gave us a first-hand look at some ways the game industry continues to change. So from two first time GDC-ers to you, here are three industry lessons you need to know for 2012.You had me at free, lost me at freemium
I'm a big fan of having the chance to try things out before I buy them. Before you buy a new pair of shoes, you try them on right? You have to see if they fit, see if they're your style. I feel the same way about Apps on my phone. How Tim Schafer changed indie games forever
By Jim Squires
Over the last few years, Kickstarter has proven to be a real boon for the indie games development community. No longer fearing that their projects won't make back the initial investment, the crowdfunding model has become all but a must for any financially sensible indie developer. So how do you take this business model and make it even more viable? You tie a big project to it that gets everyone talking.Monday Morning Quarterback: How to fix copying and plagiarism in games
By Joel Brodie
Another week, another lawsuit. Yesterday, Spry Fox, the developers of the social game Triple Town, sued 6Waves for copy infringement, accusing the latter of copying their game with the release of Yeti Town on the iPhone. Last week, Nimblebit accused Zynga of copying their game Tiny Tower with the release of Dream Heights in the Canadian iTunes Store. Today Buffalo Studios just did the same about Bingo Blitz and Zynga Bingo. And in December, Zynga and Vostu settled a lawsuit whereby Zynga has sued Vostu for copying its game CityVille which Vostu counter-sued, claiming the pot-calling-the-kettle-black defense (that Zynga's game was a copy of other games). With so much outright copying and downright plagiarizing going in the world of games today, I would like to submit a Modest Proposal to solve the problem once and for all.Bursting the Game Bubble Rumor
The fear of another technology bubble is washing over the gaming industry like a bad case of the flu, tainting important decisions about everything from investments to innovations. Many see the current wave of financial news from Facebook, Zynga and PopCap Games and draw comparisons with the great Internet boom and its subsequent collapse. Trepidation has nearly paralyzed some game studios as they worry about starting production on new titles. Analysts have also begun to question the valuations of recent investments in the gaming market, while some gaming companies feel pressured to sell before the bubble bursts. But will it?Plagarism as a moral choice
By Daniel Cook
Plagiarism is defined in dictionaries as the "wrongful appropriation," "close imitation," or "purloining and publication" of another author's "language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions," and the representation of them as one's own original work, but the notion remains problematic with nebulous boundaries.Monday Morning Quarterback: Do smaller publishers have more credibility on the App Store?
By Jim Squires
I was thinking about Chillingo the other day, and I couldn't help but feel a little sad. Chillingo, at least in my eyes, used to be a name that was synonymous with quality. There was a time when every game that they launched in the App Store was an event. But as they grew bigger and became more popular, it seems like they've outgrown that quality reputation that pushed them to the top in the first place. And it's all about quantity versus quality - or more accurately, quantity versus the perception of quality.Facebook Mobile’s HTML5 gaming – can it succeed?
Last week, Facebook unveiled a major update to its mobile site. Along with all of the visual changes came some pretty big news for gamers: Facebook users could now play HTML5-based games on Facebook using their mobile phone. Nine games have been available since launch, and with a week to ponder, we decided it was time to dig a little deeper and analyze just what we thought of Facebook's HTML5 gaming.
