    Disney removes controversial energy meter in new Where’s My Water? 2 update

    Up until its release this past September, Disney's Where's My Water? 2 was one of the most highly anticipated sequels in the mobile games space. But then the game was actually released, and users began to discover the heinous energy system that made the game all but unplayable without paying at regular intervals, or enduring giant wait times after only several minutes of play. Worse yet, you couldn't even pay a one-time fee to remove the energy bar entirely; only slightly extend it.So naturally, mobile gamers were not too pleased. In fact, the game even earned a measly 2.5 stars in our own official review thanks to its awful freemium model. But now it looks like Disney has finally owned up to their colossal mistake, and in a new update to Where's My Water? 2 this week, they have officially removed that controversial energy meter once and for all."The official 1.1.0 update description on both the iTunes and Google Play game pages reads: "We took your feedback to heart and REMOVED the energy system in this update! Yep that's right. Now play as often and as much as you like! For those who purchased the expanded energy meter, you will receive 2 Monster Bundles for free!" The update also adds two brand new locations into the game, called the Bayou and Winter Woods.

    If there's one thing that gets people talking around the mobile community these days, it's the highly stylized and wildly addictive 8-bit experiences from developer NimbleBit, like Tiny Tower and Nimble Quest. Now couple that winning formula with a full-on Star Wars theme, and you've got yourself one serious contender for an all-out good time. Star Wars: Tiny Death Star has just gone live on the App Store and Google Play Marketplace today, but earlier this week I had the chance to speak with Jon-Paul Dumont, the Studio Director at Disney Mobile Palo Alto, and discuss everything from what it was like working with NimbleBit on this exciting new project, to what kinds of Star Wars fun and humor players can expect to find inside their own Tiny Death Stars.The folks at Disney Mobile have actually been fans of NimbleBit and their impressive catalogue of mobile hits for quite some time, and according to Dumont, the idea for a possible collaboration with the Tiny Tower formula and LucasArts' Star Wars license just seemed to materialize out of nowhere. Disney Mobile had come up with the name "Tiny Death Star" right off the bat, and loved how you could say that name to anyone and have them instantly understand exactly what it means. Yes, I think even Obi-Wan himself would go so far as to say that NimbleBit and Disney Mobile could not "escape their destiny" together.The first thing that might come as a surprise to some Tiny Tower fans is that the team at Disney Mobile took over the actual developing duties here for Star Wars: Tiny Death Star, with NimbleBit stepping back in a more consultative role. However, you shouldn't let that fool you, because Dumont tells me that one of Disney Mobile's biggest goals with this game was to stay true to the iconic 8-bit world of Tiny Tower and preserve its unique niche of gameplay, a modern mobile legacy which Dumont describes as being almost sacred to him and his team. Well just playing through the game for a few minutes, you can already tell that Disney Mobile has done NimbleBit proud with this release, as Star Wars: Tiny Death Star is certainly a Tiny Tower game here in every sense of the word.

Tiny Tower and Stars Wars just seem like the perfect match to us, and the upcoming 8-bit mobile game is already perched high atop our list of most anticipated releases.Well to give us another little taste of all the awesomeness that's still in store, Disney has unveiled four new images of Star Wars: Tiny Death Star in action, and they're everything we hoped they would be and more. From tiny pixelated Stormtroopers to 8-bit Darth Vader himself, it looks like our Tiny Death Stars are really going to be where all of the action is at in the universe!So now enough with all of this writing, and on to the Star Wars: Tiny Death Star screenshots!"

    NimbleBit have done some pretty amazing things in short time that smartphone gaming has been a thing, though none of their subsequent releases have managed to reach quite as high on the popularity scale as 2011's Tiny Tower.Now, more than two years after their top game's release, NimbleBit are taking us on a tower-building adventure in a galaxy far far away. Star Wars: Tiny Death Star will, as the official press release puts it, let players "live life on the dark side and join Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader on a mission to attract Galactic bitizens, run intergalactic businesses, and build an all-new Death Star."This isn't the first collaboration Disney had made with a popular studio in recent months. My Muppets Show was a re-working of My Singing Monsters, tackled by the game's original developer Big Blue Bubble. And let's not forget Imangi tackling games like Temple Run: Brave and Temple Run: Oz for the House of Mouse.There's no word on an exact release date for Star Wars: Tiny Death Star quite yet, but Disney are saying that we can expect a worldwide release "soon." Though if you ask me, it can't be soon enough. JUST LOOK AT THOSE LITTLE JAWA BITIZENS!!

    There's no denying that the water-based physics puzzler Where's My Water? from Disney has become one of the biggest success stories in the entire history of the App Store, and the entire history of mobile gaming in general. So after taking some time to extend Swampy's adventure in numerous updates, not to mention in spin-off games like Where's My Perry? and Where's My Mickey?, the folks at Disney decided it was finally time to give Swampy and friends the proper sequel they deserve: that's right, a full-fledged Where's My Water? 2.But of course, the big question still remained: what new things would Where's My Water? 2 bring to the table that we haven't already seen in previous Where's My…? titles? Well as it turns out, the game is gearing up to bring a whole lot of new ideas to the beloved series, whose original game first launched two years ago this month. I recently had a chance to chat with Where's My Water? creator Tim FitzRandolph and view a live demo of Where's My Water? 2 in action a few days before the game's official release, and all I can say is that Where's My…? fans are going to be in for quite a treat.The first thing that gamers are likely to notice upon launching Where's My Water? 2 for the first time is the new inclusion of a moving world map. Taking a page from PopCap's recently released Plants vs. Zombies 2: It's About Time, this world map features each level of a level set depicted as a floating square icon, and spread throughout a water channel in a number of interactive sewer-themed environments. The adventure will take players through three distinctly fun and quirky worlds, like the Soap Factory which is responsible for the production of those addictive Rubber Duckie collectables, as they complete levels and move across each separated map.

    I'm probably not alone in thinking that when Disney Infinity was announced, it sounded a little too good to be true. Separate worlds for a bunch of beloved Disney and Pixar properties and a mode where you can mash them up, all tied together by collectible figures? Yet there it was, waiting to be played at E3, and if I can paraphrase Jackie Chiles in a completely different context, it's real, and it's spectacular.
