    I came to TrainCity as one of the few Americans who still rides trains on a daily basis, whether it's by dodging knife fights on Chicago's Green Line or suffering through yuppie commentaries on Desperate Housewives on the statelier Metra line. As such, perhaps I expected a bit too much from this charming but simple offering by LIFO Interactive and Gamevil. TrainCity has passenger trains, yes, but it wrestles with just how to implement them into the growing city around it (much like Houston or Los Angeles), and while the overall gameplay isn't bad at all, TrainCity is probably best left to the most casual of city builders.

    The Burbs takes the now incredibly familiar city-building aspects found in other Facebook games (Social City, CityVille, etc.) and does nothing to add any originality to the formula. Specifically, the game is so similar to Social City that I'm surprised Playdom hasn't spoken out in protest.

    They said it could never be done. They were wrong. As reported this morning by Inside Social Games, CityVille has surpassed FarmVille as the number one game on Facebook. In just 20 days, CityVille has reached 60,000 monthly average users (MAUs), surpassing FarmVille's current 56,000 MAUs. In daily average users (DAUs), which is not as impressively big a number but is more relevant to the business, CityVille has hit 16,778,004 DAUs, compared to FarmVille's 13,357,004 (Appdata).So, how did this happen?

    There's an endless variety of business management sims to play on Facebook, so it's quite an achievement when a developer comes up with a genuinely novel twist on the formula. My Shops has you trying to manage an ever-increasing variety of shops located on a single avenue, instead of endlessly micromanaging a single store. This is a very intuitive way to change up the formula, but surprisingly, there's very little on Facebook right now that really plays the way My Shops does. Some elements of typical timer-driven sim play are there, but there's also a lot of strategy and even some action.

    As the year 2010 ends, 3-D city-building games continue to grow into a big trend on Facebook. Exhibit A, of course, is CityVille (and it's 20 million inhabitants). As for Exhibit B, let me present to you RamaCity, an upcoming 3D social game by Bigpoint.

    The big news in Facebook games this weekend is just how fast Zynga's CityVille is growing. As of this morning, CityVille has grown to 22 million monthly active users (MAUs) and over 7 million daily active users) making it the second largest city in the world. Why is CityVille growing so fast when virality is dead on Facebook as pundits (such as myself) like to say?

    City building sims are something of a fad right now, but few games follow the form to its logical conclusions so completely as Game Insight's Big Business. Want to sell that milk? You'll need a special truck for that. Want to open some new production facilities? You'll need to see if your power plant can handle it. Here is a game that focuses on both production and refinement and, to a lesser extent, on the importance of city planning. True to its name, Big Business illustrates the interconnectivity of businesses throughout a city and the hard lesson that you must spend money to make money. Oh, and it's fun, too.

    So, how is CityVille, Zynga's latest game, doing so far a week after launch? In the words of Larry David from Curb your Enthusiasm, "pretty pretty good." Within 24 hours, 290,000 people were playing CityVille (compared to 116,000 players in FrontierVille the first day of that game). Within a week, according to David Ko (Zynga SVP Mobile), CityVille saw 3 million daily active users. Which is cool, because maybe the game is doing well enough, someone at Zynga will realize that their rocking email system that sends me an email notification every time someone I know invites me to play, sends me a gift, or sends a reminder of someone sending me a zoning permit that I ignored since it's clogging my email box, may actually tone down their email notifications a bit.
