    Vostu hits Zynga with a countersuit

    In June Zynga sued Vostu for copyright infringement, claiming that the developer's game Megacity was just a little too similar to CityVille. Now Vostu is countersuing, and claiming that Zynga attempted to enter into some sort of partnership or possibly acquire the developer prior to launching the original lawsuit.

    First Zynga sued Vostu for copyright infringement. Now myFarm developer SocialApps is suing Zynga for the same. A complaint filed by the California-based developer claims that Zynga went so far as to steal the source code from myFarm for use in its own farming game, FarmVille.

    Facebook video calling could lead to improved multiplayer gaming

    Just last week, I was playing a game of Vorp, a competitive action game on Facebook, with the developers. Most of the players were on Skype, and so we were able to both coordinate with team members and trash talk opponents. Video and voice chat is a common feature in many multiplayer games, and with today's news that Skype video calls are coming to Facebook, it could well become a common part of social games, too.

    Zynga sues for Vostu for copying its games. Pot calling the kettle black?

    This is ironic, or ironico, as they say in Portuguese. Zynga is suing Brazilian social games developer Vostu for copying its games. Zynga, of course, has been accused and sued for copying games themselves (or Mafia Wars, which was inspired by Mob Wars) so if they are filing a lawsuit, the evidence must be over-whelming.Based on the reporting by Techcrunch, it's compelling. Screen shots of Vostu's MegaCity are quite carbon-copy like to Zynga's CityVille. Filing a lawsuit for copy infringement in the world of games, where "cloning" is an actual business strategy is a slippery slope.

    CityVille is coming to the iPhone, but not in the way that you think. Instead of a mobile port of the most popular game on Facebook, Zynga has announced that an iOS spin-off called CityVille Hometown will be released soon as a completely separate game.

    In the same way that FrontierVille was a clear evolution of the FarmVille formula, Zynga's first foray into strategy gaming builds off of another immensly popular game: CityVille. Set to release tomorrow, Empires & Allies is described by executive producer Amer Ajami as "CityVille meets Risk," and features elements of city building, strategy, and even player vs player combat. We managed to get a brief first look at the game in advance of its release and, really, we simply can't wait to finally get our hands on the game.
