Once a game genre blows up on Facebook, it gets increasingly more difficult for new developers to find a way to make their entry in the genre feel distinct. Playrix's Township, rather remarkably, manages not to look or feel excessively like any of the other city building games currently available on Facebook. What sets Township apart is a mechanic that ties the size and prosperity of a user's town to economic factors like farming, industry, and trade. While the result may levy a "no friends" tax on solo gamers, it has lots of promise for players who have friends in the game with them.

Don't you just love CityVille Hometown on the iPhone? All that stuff to do, the social interaction, the customization? Apparently, Japan Life loves it too. Not to the point that it's a rip-off, but there's a strong resemblance. That doesn't stop it from being a fun social title, but it does lose points for lack of originality.

Dream Planet is one of the newest city building games on facebook. Unfortunately, at this time, it can barely be called a game. You begin by selecting the planet you wish to build on, choosing from several different terrains. But once you have chosen your terrain you are on your own to start building your city.
Space City Review
While some may see Space City as just another social game, its unique space theme complete with race diversity is a nice diversion from the norm. In Space City, you are given the task of running a planet in the far reaches of the universe. Not only have humans discovered this far off planet, but other alien races have as well. Yes, you will have to share this planet with Starlings, Puggles and Dondees: the three alien races.
Island Empire Review
Island Empire is a social city building game that essentially plays like a nautical version of Haypi Kingdom. You build things and collect resources as you attempt to build up a prosperous port town, and you can both join forces with other players and attack them depending on your mood. Aside from the theme, there's little to differentiate Island Empire from all of the other menu-driven city building sims on the iPhone. Which isn't to say that it's bad, it's just lacking much in the way of original ideas.

Elf City Review
Elf City looks and plays a lot like early Facebook games. It's a management sim where you build a little settlement of your own and earn money from operating the local market. The plot of the game, such as it is, somehow involves Earth being destroyed. A handful of human survivors are rescued by elven spaceships and taken to the elven homeworld for a chance to build a new civilization. In practical terms this means you get a plot of land to fill up with buildings, leveling up and unlocking new items as you gain experience.
