Thanks to top notch releases like Shadow Era and Kard Combat, it's become abundantly clear over the last year that trading card games (TCG's) are a perfect match for touch screen devices. Despite this, the granddaddy of them all - Magic: The Gathering - still hadn't made the transition. That's about to change.
There are all kinds of tabletop games nowadays, and all kinds of gamers who play them. You've got your deck-builders who pour over their Magic cards, constantly trying to build the perfect deck. You've got your D&D groups spending hours on backstory and building dungeons that might get completely passed over. Then you've got your folks who are into the painted miniature scene.
Over the last couple of years I've fallen deep into the world of tabletop gaming. After first discovering that there was a world beyond Monopoly and Connect Four, I quickly fell down a slippery slope while trying to grab onto everything I could. Ticket To Ride! Carcassonne! Catan! If you haven't made the leap yet, DO IT. But the one sub-genre of tabletop gaming that has yet gotten its claws in me is collectible miniature games. That's where Confrontation comes in.
One genre which has been absolutely exploding on iOS is the gaggle of card and board games being translated onto touch screens. Storydeck: Steampunk is an interesting beast to get a grasp on. It's not really a game. But I don't mean that in the same way as when I say it about something like To The Moon or Dear Esther. Those are more artistic expressions that tell their stories through the construct of a video game. Sometimes I'll even use the shudderingly awkward term "interactive fiction." No, this is something very different.
Square Enix is typically known for story-heavy JRPGs, but the mega-publisher is taking aim at the mobile space with the newly announced Guardian Cross. The company announced the existence of this new card battle game via their Facebook page, stating that the title will be released on iOS devices in the spring and will also eventually make its way to Android as well.
