The world - although it's not entirely clear which world - has come to an end. All that remains are the robots. Like the humans that built them, the machines eke out existences in a variety of ways; some in great, sprawling cities, others in hermit-like isolation. Horatio Nullbuilt v5 and his floating, sharp-tongued companion Crispin are two such robots, living alone in the midst of a great, lifeless desert. But when the core that powers the crashed airship they call home is stolen by a hulking, heavily-armed behemoth, they set out across the desert to reclaim it in a journey that ultimately leads them to the crowded, crumbling towers of Metropol.
The Book of Unwritten Tales is a favorite around these parts, thanks to its enjoyable point-and-click adventure gameplay and offbeat sense of humor. If we were to lodge a complaint against it, though, it would probably be how underutilized the Critter character was. Apparently reading our minds, the creators have gone and unveiled The Book of Unwritten Tales: The Critter Chronicles, a prequel that tells the story of how the eponymous Critter and character Nate Bonnett first met.
We tend to take instructions in video games for granted. This is especially true in recent years, where the first 10-20 minutes of nearly every game is dedicated to a tutorial of some sort. Seemingly in response to that, Klei has gone and made Don't Starve, a PC game that throws the player into an instruction-less world and challenges them to survive. Are you a bad enough dude/dudette?
I have been along for the ride of The Walking Dead since Episode 1: A New Day. I liked it, but I didn't love it. It showed promise. By the end of Episode 2: Starved For Help, I was completely on board. It was at the end of Episode 3: Long Road Ahead where I first uttered the phrase "potential game of the year." The penultimate Episode 4: Around Every Corner wasn't as high a watermark, but it set up a compelling and harrowing finale. Does the newest and final episode of the season, No Time Left, possibly payoff?
Mary is a teenager struggling to survive on the streets of 19th-century London, afflicted by dreams of her young sister Emily, who was lost to her in a deadly train crash. Or was she? Driven by her visions, she sets out to determine the truth once and for all.
It's a dramatic and sweeping historical tale that takes place across 16th century Europe and Africa, told through the eyes of two young inventors who could compete with Leonardo da Vinci himself. But both ancient legends and modern politics intercept the siblings' lives, sending them on an amazing journey that spans the continents. The Lost Chronicles of Zerzura is an epic adventure with fantastic puzzles and a flawless presentation.
The annoying thing about magical post-apocalyptic settings is that the fate of all that's left of civilization rests solely on your shoulders. No sidekicks, no reinforcements, and in the case of Wraithborne, the latest iOS hack-n-slash game from Cresent Moon Games and Alpha Dog Games, not even a name. That's just the way it goes, so there's no use pouting about it. Pick up your hammer and get to smashing!
