Some people will do anything for fame, but in ERS Game Studio's newest adventure puzzle game, Reality Show: Fatal Shot, that desire for 15 minutes in the spotlight actually turns deadly, as a man is killed on air by being thrown off of a bridge. You'll need to jump into the shoes of a detective to solve the mystery surrounding this man's death, while always keeping in mind that even the victims aren't always who they appear to be.
Interactive fiction has been around for decades, evolving in the early days of computers to provide rich environments without the need for fancy graphics. The genre has waxed and waned in popularity over time, but some of the most treasured releases have come from a company called Infocom. Now you get to experience some those classic adventures right on your high-tech mobile device!
Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller follows the adventures of FBI agent Erica Reed, who possesses supernatural powers that allow her to witness past events, pull "memories" out of inanimate objects and even bring out long-forgotten memories in the minds of others. It's an intriguing idea but it's also a mess, brought low by clunky technology and writing and game mechanics that are completely out of place in such a dark, serious game.
I've never been one to believe in ghosts. But Haunted has recently shown me that ghosts are not only real, but that sometimes they can be a cranky two-foot pirate named Oscar who won't leave you alone. Using this as its hilarious groundwork, Haunted serves as a wonderful throwback to point-and-click adventure games like The Longest Journey and the Monkey Island series, with a charming story and challenging gameplay style all its own!
It could be argued that the adventure genre's glory days have come and gone. After all, it would be next to impossible for developers to top the brilliance of classics like Maniac Mansion, The Secret of Monkey Island, and Day of the Tentacle. Many have come close, but few have come closer than Daedelic Entertainment with the Deponia series. Featuring gorgeous artwork, clever puzzles, and jokes that are actually funny, it captures what made the genre so well-loved in the first place.
The "Fright Reality Show" provides a bit of an unusual twist on the reality television genre we've come to know and love. To maximize the show's impact, participants agree not to notify their family members of filming dates or locations so that nobody knows what's actually happening, and more ominously, they also agree that they will bear sole responsibility for any injuries suffered while filming. And one contestant has already died!
A prequel to The Book of Unwritten Tales, The Critter Chronicles takes us back in time a bit to explore the origins of the furry Critter we all love, as well as telling the tale of wannabe captain Nate and his perfectly legitimately acquired airship. It's old school adventure gaming to the core, complete with smart writing, hilarious dialogue, and more inventory puzzles than you can attach two sticks together and shake at!
