Call of Duty goes mobile with Call of Duty: Strike Team
By Joe Jasko
We all knew it was only a matter of time before a legit Call of Duty game found its way to mobile devices, and it looks like that time is finally here, as in a pretty surprising move this morning (given the complete lack of news that the game was even inexistence), Activision quietly sneaked Call of Duty: Strike Team onto the App Store. Strike Team is said to feature both an originally crafted single-player campaign mode, as well as a survival mode that finds players fending off waves of increasingly difficult enemies in order to compete with their friends on the online leaderboards. Was Activision’s Bobby Kotick right all along?
By Joel Brodie
Last year, while Disney was paying $700 mm+ for Playdom, Electronic Arts was buying PopCap Games for $1 billion, and Zynga was going to be valued at over $20 billion in an IPO, Bobby Kotick was being ridiculed as as a dinosaur in the games industry for missing the social games boat. Even, as it so happened, by this guy!More Skylanders iOS games are on the way
By Jim Squires
While it might be aimed at a younger demographic, even adults have to admit that Skylanders is pretty cool stuff. A kid-friendly action-RPG with physical toys that you can collect and use in the game? It's a retailer's dream come true! And since it was the best-selling toy of Christmas 2011, you'd better believe the brand is back for 2012.Pitfall swings back onto mobile devices
It was just a week or so ago when I wrote Six Atari franchises that should see a reboot, a list commemorating Atari's 40th birthday. Unknown to everyone but my Editor-in-Chief, and I, this post was originally complete with seven titles. The secret franchise that I needed to drop? Pitfall - it's by Activision, not Atari! Because of this, I couldn't help but find it ironic that Activision would be the first to answer my call for a reboot: it looks like a rebooted Pitfall is coming to mobile platforms.Has Activision changed its tune on mobile?
By Jim Squires
While every major publisher and their kin seemed eager to jump into the gold rush that was mobile gaming in the last few years, Activision has been one of the few major names to remain somewhat standoffish. So much so that in December 2010, Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said: "we don't view the App Store as a really big opportunity for dedicated games … we don't see an opportunity for us to participate in that market." But a lot can change in 18 months.Riding high on Cloud Patrol; talking Skylanders with Vicarious Visions [interview]
By Jim Squires
Regardless of which platform you prefer to do your gaming on, there's no denying that Skylanders was a bonafide hit. And while the developers at Toys for Bob may have been responsible for the main game, the fine folks at Vicarious Visions were working hard behind the scenes on a wonderfully unique release in the Skylanders franchise.Ex-Call of Duty developers form social games studio U4iA
Joining the ever-growing ranks of developers making "hardcore" games for the Facebook audience, former Activision developers Dusty Welch and Chris Archer have formed a brand new studio called U4iA.How does CityVille compare to Call of Duty: Black Ops?
By Joel Brodie
We all know that CityVille is big (100 million users big). But, how do Facebook games stack up against the heavyweights in the core game space, such as Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops? I've often pondered this question, as have the fine folks at IGN who put together a chart comparing the top games on Facebook and in the retail video game space in 2010 by revenues and users.
