What was once a Facebook game is now a self-contained mobile experience. Backyard Monsters: Unleashed from KIXEYE is an upgraded version of the Facebook combat simulation game Backyard Monsters. The game has made the transition to the portable world without losing anything, bringing iOS gamers one of the most organized, satisfying, and hilarious freemium strategy games around.Backyard Monsters: Unleashed's setup will be familiar to anyone who's played a combat strategy game in the past: run your village, build and upgrade buildings, raise an army, go forth and conquer. Your little piece of property is a backyard surrounded by greenery. By placing resource generators, defense and miscellaneous structures, you can turn your tiny village into a sprawling war factory. One that's nigh invulnerable from neighboring backyards' attacks!"To go from zero to hero, Backyard Monsters: Unleashed spreads currency requirements out across four different types of resources: sticks, stones, putty, and goo. The first two make enough sense, as both are used to build basic and advanced structures, respectively. Goo is needed to spawn monsters, and it also serves as a currency for entering battle. Putty is used to construct certain buildings as well as to unlock new monsters. From what we can gather, monsters are basically just carefully shaped piles of squishy goop that live in stick houses. Doesn't stop them from being fierce on the battlefield, though.In addition to the resources above, Backyard Monsters: Unleashed also features "shiny," the game's "hurry-up" currency, along with an optional in-app purchase of an additional builder to let you work on more projects simultaneously. All resources are earned through normal play and as post-combat spoils, but you can also refill them with a quick microtransaction.
Super Roman Conquest Preview
After spending a collective 16 years at storied game developer LucasArts, the studio behind games like Full Throttle, Sam and Max Hit the Road, the Monkey Island series, and of course a truckload of Star Wars titles, Matt Boland and Tim Temmerman found themselves cast adrift when George Lucas sold the ranch to Disney, which sadly decided to shut it down. Rather than move on to other big studios to work on other big games, they decided to roll the dice on the indie life, combining their love of history and older strategy releases like Myth II: Soulblighter and the SNES cartridge King Arthur's World into a new project called Super Roman Conquest."We settled on Rome as a setting for the game because Tim and I are both big fans of history, especially the history of Rome," Boland explained. "I'm a HUGE fan of Dan Carlin's Hardcore History podcast and he did an excellent multi-part podcast on the fall of the Roman Republic called, 'Death Throes of the Republic.' It's a ridiculously fascinating and engaging narration of everything that went into the eventual collapse of the Roman Republic and rise of the Empire. These people lived in a governmental system shockingly similar to our own in the United States and faced many of the same problems we do today. After listening to Hardcore History, I honestly felt a strong connection to these people who lived thousands of years ago and wanted to create a game that could serve to highlight some of these similarities for people who maybe weren't aware of them.""On the surface, Super Roman Conquest looks like more like a side-scrolling arcade game than anything else, but it is in fact a strategy game. It won't feature territory management, taxation, or other such components found in strategy heavyweights like Crusader Kings; instead, the intent is to allow fans of the genre to "scratch the itch" without getting bogged down in multi-layered menus and obtuse UIs."We want people to be able to pick up Super Roman Conquest and enjoy themselves, but also want more experienced users to use the tricks they've learned to manipulate the various systems we've built," Boland said. "Essentially we want the gameplay of SRC to boil down our favorite strategy games to the essence of what we feel are their greatest strengths: epic, tactics-filled battles and dynamic, game altering decisions."
King Arthur’s Gold Review
King Arthur's Gold is one of those strange indie titles that appears to be constantly in beta - i.e. not completely ready according to the developers, yet still available to purchase in its current state. The game was also in beta back when I played it more than two years ago as well, so it's anyone's guess when the "full release" will happen.Still, there's a lovely online multiplayer experience to be found in amongst all that treasure, especially if you can get a bunch of friends involved. It may be perhaps a little too "hardcore" for some players, but if you've enjoyed 2D sandbox-style games like Terraria and Junk Jack X, then King Arthur's Gold may well be up your street.You take control of a war-wager, part of a larger team that is looking to take out the opposing team by any means necessary and steal their flags. Everything provided is in a very medieval vein, from the classes you can select, to the machinery you can take control over. By working together with the rest of your team, it's possible to build up your castle's defenses, and then rain hell down on the opposition.The action takes place on a 2D Terraria-like plane, with each individual block in the world available for smashing up or building on top of. The Builder class is able to chop down trees and build grand-scale structures to keep the enemies out, while the Archers and Knights are tasked with keeping baddies at bay. It's all about balancing who takes what classes in your team of up to 16 bloodthirsty wretches.Strike Wing: Raptor Rising Review
Strike Wing: Raptor Rising is the odd case of a pretty good game which just doesn't quite have all it needs to sink its hooks into you. It does have quite a bit going for it, as you are greeted with a choice of control style, ranging between touchscreen joystick and gyroscopic tilt steering; and what's more surprising than it should be in this business, the touchscreen controls are actually quite good. Accompanying the slick controls, which also include buttons for firing, boosting, and slowing down, are some very nice graphics and suitable (if not particularly catchy) music and sound effects for your space dogfight.And a dogfight is just what it is, as you engage the enemy in a full 360-degree field of battle, shooting at the enemy fighters with the help of your wingmen. There is also the boast of adaptable enemy AI, changing as you play, but it can be a bit difficult to notice, at least earlier on. Fortunately, locking on to enemies is pretty simple, as you don't need a precise lock on your targets to score hits: just getting them inside the wider targeting reticule is often enough to engage a small degree of auto-targeting from your guns, alleviating what could have been a rather frustrating experience."The game is broken up into missions, and this is where things begin to falter. Each mission contains a different scenario or end objective, but there isn't really anything to tie them together. It's essentially a high-score game, and while that's not bad—we're certainly not ones to say games must have a story—something about it just feels kind of lacking without one.
NinJump Rooftops Review
NinJump Rooftops brings us back to a time when the App Store was just starting out, and simple timewaster games like Doodle Jump and Can Knockdown ruled the mobile scene. In fact, Backflip Studios' own NinJump used to be the talk of the town around these parts in 2010. However, it's not 2010 anymore, and with so much gameplay innovation and graphical prowess shaping the world of mobile gaming as we know it today, can these basic little timewaster games still hold a place in our age of high-end graphics and deeply immersive gameplay?Much like everything else in NinJump Rooftops, the concept is simple: you are a ninja, and you have to run along the endless rooftops, while avoiding hazards and taking out enemies with your ninja jump attacks. The controls are equally simple, with one tap anywhere on the screen corresponding to making your ninja jump, a second tap entering into a double jump, and holding down on the screen increasing the height of your jump. The gameplay itself is of the sidescrolling endless runner variety, and Backflip Studios uses some pretty nice 3D visuals to bring the world to life (although your scenery will be strictly limited to the Asian-inspired rooftops, and there's never much of a variety no matter how far you manage to make it during any one of your runs)."So you'll be running and jumping as par for the course, and picking up tons of gold coins along the way which you can use to buy power-ups that give you an extra added edge. The power-ups are also standard endless runner fare, with magnet boosts that draw surrounding coins towards you, and a big blue rocket that lifts you up and saves you if you happen to fall. You'll also be met with your fairly typical in-game goals, such as "Collect X amount of coins over time" or "Run X amount of meters in a single run." Completing these objectives will net you more additional coins, which can then be used to buy more power-ups, and so on.
Batman: Arkham Origins Walkthrough
Batman: Arkham Origins is an action/brawler game created by Warner Bros. Entertainment. Batman must beat up reams of thugs and assassins for the safety and glory of Gotham City. To survive, he'll need to punch, block, upgrade his skills, and change his suit once in a while. Gamezebo's quick start strategy guide will provide you with detailed images, tips, information, and hints on how to make sure the Batman stays alive for one more night."
Mega Dead Pixel Review
We've done endless runners, and endless jumpers, and endless shooters, and all sorts of other endless objectives in video games. How about a little bit of endless falling? Mega Dead Pixel tasks you with dropping off a computer monitor, and dodging around the various pixel shapes for as long as possible, pulling off tight maneuvers and collecting other dead pixels that have lost their way in this crazy world.There's something suspiciously compelling about Mega Dead Pixel. While the idea of falling around various pixelated shapes might not sound like such a heavenly idea, I found myself unable to pull away from it for hours. I just had to unlock that next pixelwall, and buy those new shapes, and beat those new missions, and enter that new world, and...That's essentially the entire pull of Mega Dead Pixel in a nutshell - there's just so much to unlock and play around with in this game. But it's also the playful twist on the regular endless runner genre that keeps the game fresh. See, you don't get points for getting as far as possible in this game; rather, it's all about pulling off near-misses and smashing through anything smaller than yourself.If you brush past any object as you fall, you'll gain points. Brush enough pixels and you'll turn into Mega Pixel and begin smashing through the level. Each time you smash into another shape, you'll gain some points and get slightly smaller. If you're the smallest you can get and you hit something, it's game over.
Batman: Arkham Origins Review
As a huge fan of Rocksteady's Batman Arkham series on home game consoles, I've been one of the many fans eagerly anticipating the release of the gritty prequel, Batman: Arkham Origins, coming up at the end of the month. But in a much-welcomed and surprise move, NetherRealm Studios has graced us with a mobile tie-in version of Batman: Arkham Origins. Coming from the same developer who gave a similar mobile treatment to other big-time superhero games like Batman: Arkham City and Injustice: Gods Among Us, how would this latest touchscreen brawler hold up to the expectations of excellence that Batman has brought to the gaming world at large in recent years?Spoiler alert: it holds up well, very well. The fully voiced and animated opening cinematic of Batman: Arkham Origins is simply astounding, and it made me feel like I was watching a full-fledged console game right there in the palm of my hands. The graphics elsewhere in the game are also up to the highest of caliber, from the fluid combat animations to the nice variety of thug types and environments, and the dark and ominous tone of the Batman Arkham console games has been revitalized here quite gloriously. Much like its upcoming big brother console game, the story of Batman: Arkham Origins involves a number of deadly assassins all vying to be the one who kills Batman once and for all, in order to win a substantial monetary reward. This allows the game to incorporate some wonderful and frightening boss fights against these assassins, like Deadshot, Copperhead, and my personal favorite, Deathstroke.The actual gameplay of Batman: Arkham Origins is extremely top-notch, and should be familiar to anyone who's ever played Batman: Arkham City Lockdown or Injustice: Gods Among Us. In each combat mission, players simply tap on the screen to pummel oncoming hordes of street thugs and other devious villains, while holding down two fingers on the screen to defend against blowbacks and other cheap shots. What's great about this is that the control scheme is so easy to get into, but offers just as much depth for those players who really want to make the most of it. Batman is capable of holding two different battle stances, an Assault Stance and a Guarded Stance, and activating each one opens up a number of additional special attacks or healing boosts that you can activate mid-fight.
