The game plays out pretty much exactly as you’d expect, not that that’s a bad thing. You’ll spend most of your time gathering resources, building and upgrading your base and training up survivors to make them better at zombie mashing. And then there are the fights.

These play out a little bit like tower defense scraps. A horde wanders in and you need to place your attackers on towers. Some of them fire guns, some of them swing melee weapons. You also get AoE attacks like dynamite and molotov cocktails that can take out big groups of zombies in one fell swoop.

There are missions to complete that drive the story along. Rebuild the police station, move a little further along with the narrative. It’s a simple rhythm and it’s one that’s going to be familiar with anyone who’s played a resource management game on mobile in the last ten years.

Everything is presented with the level of polish you’d expect from a game built around such a massive franchise. There are plenty of familiar faces here too – ones you can recruit to your cause or ones who are just there to offer advice or try and mess up everything you’ve accomplished.

The Walking Dead: Survivors does a pretty decent job of capturing the barbaric heart of the comics – everything here is life or death, whether you’re cutting down some wood or exploring a fogged up section of the map.

And it all boils down to an entertaining, time-consuming distraction. You’ll want your settlement to thrive, which will draw you deeper into the games ecosystem. This is an engaging resource management game that has enough twists and zombies to keep your interest for a long while.

Like most of the internet - or at the very least, the nerdier half of the web - I've spent the last decade enamoured with Penny Arcade. Arguably the most celebrated webcomic of all time, the adventures of Gabe and Tycho have given me plenty of reasons to chuckle over the years. So when they started an episodic RPG series based on the franchise back in 2008, I was tickled pink. But the series has been slow going, and after two episodes, was scrapped entirely. But as it turns out, you can't keep a good franchise down.
