Super Stickman Golf 2 is one of those strange mobile games which, on the face of it, doesn’t really offer anything that noteworthy or exciting – and yet you find yourself sat up blurry-eyed at four in the morning unable to put it down.

If a friend asked you to describe it, all you’d really be able to muster up is “well, it’s really good, you hit a ball around and… yeah, it’s really good.” Fortunately I’m here to help you out, and give you a few precise words you can utilize to bump that description up.
The game takes place across 20 or so side-scrolling 2D golf courses, with the main goal to – duh – get the ball in the hole. You aim your shot, set the power of the swing, then watch as the golf ball either falls firmly into place exactly where you wanted it to go, or ends up in the water for the umpteenth time.
The underlying, highly honed element that truly makes it a wonderful experience is the tightness of the controls, and the near-perfect feel to them.
Usually with golf games you have to use the first half an hour or so to get used to the power and angle needed to make even the most basic of shots. Not with Super Stickman Golf 2 – from the very beginning I was getting hole in ones and rarely under/over-hitting, so well-tuned is the feel to the controls.
It’s the brilliant level design that does it too. Each level has been pieced together in such a way that it rarely feels repetitive – you’re always tackling new ideas both in the shape of the terrains, and the silly concepts that are brought into play.
And the customization! Oh the customization. From the different hats, to the golfer types and the power-ups, there’s plenty of content to explore and experiment with. Certain items give you special abilities that help in certain circumstances, so trying to find the perfect combination for each course is great fun. You’ll need to play a serious amount of the game to level up enough to unlock everything, but it’s worth it.
Throw on top of this asynchronous online play, and you’ve got yourself a winner – especially for the “free” price tag (note that we didn’t buy a single item with real-money, and the game never forces you to – you can unlock “Bux” virtual currency in the game simply by collecting them during courses.)
If only the game had online leaderboards for showing your friends how good you are at the campaign mode, that would have kept us coming back for a very long time.
Super Stickman Golf 2 combines two potentially dull themes – stickmen and golf – and comes away with a solid and hugely entertaining mobile game. Who would have thunk it!
