Shooty Quest (download from the App Store and Google Play Store) is pretty darn simple. You’re playing a crossbow-wielding hero who’s stood in the middle of the screen. Enemies attack you from all sides, and it’s up to you to tap the screen, fire arrows at them and survive to see the next level.

That’s the core of the game, but there are a few twists that make things even more interesting. Enemies drop potions and bombs that you can use to power up your attacks. Some foes need to be taken down with these more powerful weapons, otherwise you’re going to have to pepper them with standard arrows.

Bombs let you attack monsters that are hiding behind cover, and you can equip knives that let you stab out if anyone gets too close. You can also dodge projectiles by swiping on the screen, and set traps that’ll snare orcs and goblins if they walk over them.

There are boss fights too that mix things up, and you’ll need to use everything you’ve learned to overcome them. You earn coins for completing levels, and a star-rating system grants more gold the better you do. You can spend that cash on new equipment to make your hero even tougher.

The action here is quick-fire, and while you might get away with playing the first couple of levels with one digit, soon you’re going to have to be tapping frantically with a couple of thumbs. Throw in an endless mode and you’ve got a chunky arcade package.

Shooty Quest is a lot of fun, and while it might not be super deep it’s got enough going on to keep you entertained. Playing through a few levels is a great way to kill a bus ride or a few minutes elsewhere. The game might not stick in your memory, but you’ll find yourself heading back to it all the same.
