You’re provided with seven different trivia categories at the beginning of each round. Every correct answer will net you points, along with the ability to place another tile on the board. You’ll be able to expand by placing additional tiles next to the ones you’ve already set down. Your opponents can — and inevitably will — cut you off at every given chance. It’s up to you to not only make it to the center first, but to have the most points when you eventually do.
The game is comparable to Trivial Pursuit in that your progression across the board is linked with your ability to correctly answer questions, but the ability of your opponent to completely screw you over adds a new layer of intensity to the mix. As such, I recommend you play against random users, as opposed to seeking out friends via username or tracking them down through Facebook. But it’s up to you!
Other than cutting you off, the biggest way the other player can put the kibosh on your plans is by stealing one of the bonus squares scattered throughout the board. Each of the bonus squares are labeled with different categories, and placing a tile that’s associated with the same category on it has the potential to net you bonus points.
Of course, that’s not the only way to get bonus points. Combining two of the same-colored trivia categories will provide you with the chance to earn double the points. Furthermore, correctly answering questions in a row will increase your point income. I realize all of this leads up to a tall order for what’s ultimately a trivia game, but it’s all packaged in a way that prevents things from getting too convoluted. That said, if you’re in the market for a game that’s strictly trivia, Quizboard won’t quite suit those needs.
As much as I love the concept of the game, it’s not without its flaws. Some of the questions, for instance, are too easy for their own good. At one point I was asked to name what item people used to hit balls in the game of golf. I can’t think of anyone in this world who doesn’t know that a tennis racket is the answer to that question.
It’s not a game I’d recommend to everyone, but Quizboard is something I could see resonating with a lot of people. It’s also free to play, meaning you’ve no excuse to avoid giving it a chance. If you find that you like it, you can upgrade to the premium version to remove the ads and acquire additional boards to play on. Doing so is far from necessary to enjoy the game, but it can add a lot of longevity to the experience.
