Look, like it or not, fruit and vegetables are good for you. They’re definitely better for you than burgers. This isn’t some controversial, wacky, out-there concept, it’s just a scientific fact. Which is why No More Veggies (download from the App Store and Play Store) feels a bit icky.

The game sees you running along a farm track, beset on all sides by vegetables and fruit. Tomatoes fall from the sky, radishes roll towards you menacingly, people in carrot suits attempt to accost you.

You need to avoid all of them, dodging through the obstacles and picking up the hamburgers scattered around that represent the game’s currency. More burgers means more cash to spend on unlocking the game’s skins, which are the only thing that really changes here.

You can’t jump – except when a ramp appears – you can’t dodge or slide or smack everything. This is one of the simplest runners we’ve played in a good long while. It’s fun for a bit, but then it loses what little shine it had.

Everything works just fine in No More Veggies, it’s just that after about 30 seconds you’re going to have seen it all. In fact, you’ve already seen it all – there’s nothing that new to speak of here.

And then there’s the overall message. Sure, it’s fantasy, it’s meant to be stupid, but entertainment is part of how we form our cultural narratives, and junk food good, veggies bad doesn’t feel like a useful addition to that.

No More Veggies is pretty unremarkable, all told. It’ll keep you entertained for a few minutes, but once you start to think about it a bit deeper you’re going to put it down for good.
