Headphones for kids are a great idea in our opinion. How many times have you seen parents plonking their child in front of a tablet or phone, but with the audio playing out loud – or inexplicably with no audio being played at all? Well for us, the answer is a lot. A lot of times.

So these CareBuds from myFirst are wisely targeting a growing audience, and we’ll be honest – we’re pretty impressed about what they offer in terms of features and value.

They’re immediately kid friendly, with even the packaging unusually easy to unwrap for a set of earbuds. The charging cable even feels a little spongier than what we’re used to, although that could be our imagination.

In terms of the earbuds and case itself, they’re very light but the latter doesn’t feel like it would fall apart if dropped. We tested it a few times on various surfaces and that was very much the case. Reassuring as well, as this is an essential quality when younger users are involved.

The earbuds are also lightweight but never feel hollow or tacky. They’re also very comfortable, and we never had any discomfort wearing them for longer periods of time.

Included are several different earbuds size to use too, meaning both parent and child can wear these without too much trouble.

What we were also impressed with was how easy these were to set up, with connecting via bluetooth completely painless. We’ve found with many headphones that the act of simply finding them in your bluetooth settings is an epic quest in itself, so the set up being so simple here was a delight.

In terms of the sound quality, it was a mixed bag. These are a little quieter than we’ve come to expect from headphones, but they are specifically limited to 85dB. This is a wise choice considering the audience they’re made for, but should be noted by anyone wanting to use them on noisier places such as public transport or more livelier restaurants.

The quality of the output was solid enough for the price however, with the different music and games we tested with them working well.

There’s also a smart Transparency Mode, which automatically activates when the earbuds detect body movement. This allows your child to be more aware of what’s around them – such as while walking for example.

This feature sums up the myFirst CareBuds. They’re well priced – at around the £50 or $50 mark – and if you’re looking for a more customised pair of earbuds for your child these are probably your best bet in a surprisingly small niche.

The good
