Mini Blaster takes its cues from Geometry Wars and, quite frankly, if you’re going to take your cues from any modern shooter, that’s definitely the place to start. This is a game that understands what makes your palms sweat and your teeth grind, and it combines that knowledge in a simple package that’s as addictive as it is engaging.

You’re playing a square, controlling it with a single digit. There’s a ring around that square, and any other shape that moves into that ring is going to get shot at. Blow up an enemy and it drops some little triangular gems. Kill enough enemies and you’ll move on to the next level.

In between levels you get a choice between two different power-ups. These can change the range of your ring, give you more powerful shots and even add helpers that follow you around and blast at your foes. The upgrades stack too, so after a couple of levels you might end up with homing missiles, a speed boost and a laser.

When you die you can watch a video to keep going or spend some gems. You can also spend gems at the start of a new run to get an instant one-time upgrade, or save them up and get one that you’ll always start with.

The gameplay balances dodging and blasting brilliantly, and there’s never a moment where you can stop and take a breath. You’re always on the move, always avoiding new waves and taking on new shapes that attack in different ways. The levels never last more than a minute, and then you tool up and head back out.

This is an action-packed shooter with a compulsive rhythm that’s super difficult to put down. It might not have the depth or modes of Geometry Wars, but it manages to capture so much of what made that game great in a small package. Mini Blaster is the perfect way to fill your mobile gaming sessions with some wonderful stress.
