Lost Amulets: Mystic Land is a game that offers a little bit of everything, which means that — while the story might be pretty lightweight — there’s plenty to enjoy here.
The crux of the story is that you have to find five lost amulets in a bid to restore balance and harmony to the world. No, I’m not quite sure how that works either, but I enjoyed getting there. To piece together such amulets, you have to complete a series of different mini games and challenges. The fun part here is that it’s randomly decided by spinning a wheel and seeing what game type you get. Lost Amulets: Mystic Land offers plenty of different ways of playing, meaning you’ll rarely become bored.
Granted, some of the mini games are less interesting than others, but none take longer than a few minutes to complete. One of the less interesting ones is that of Bingo, with you spotting numbered balls that match your Bingo card, and tapping on them to clear them. It’s not overly challenging, but it won’t take long to finish at least. In a similar vein are matching games where you pair up corresponding pictures. Another might have you going through a few rounds of picking out just one matching pair out of a bunch of shapes. Each is fairly quick to wrap up, and then you can move onto something else.
Where Lost Amulets: Mystic Land’s strengths lie are with its Hidden Object and Mahjong solitaire games. The former is frequently quite varied. Sometimes, you’re picking out items from a list while another time you might be looking for a silhouette or a number of the same item type. This is a game that likes to offer you challenges such as ‘pick out X number of Chinese symbols,’ so it keeps you on your toes rather than expecting you to just find dull objects like buckets. Such variety keeps things interesting and, again, it’s all reasonably fast paced. While the Mahjong solitaire levels aren’t the most taxing of challenges, they are quite fun too. Lost Amulets: Mystic Land offers up a whole extra helping of them too via a second full game mode that’s solely Mahjong solitaire levels.
In most of the level types, you can use hints to help you out a bit more. These hints are acquired by picking up special gems as you play. They’re reasonably generous and you don’t have to wait for a timer to reset to use them. If you’re truly stumped and run out of hints, eventually the game will let you proceed anyhow when the time limit expires. It’s doubtful this will ever happen, but the choice being there is certainly welcomed.
Admittedly, Lost Amulets: Mystic Land isn’t the most stylish of games to look at. In fact Lost Amulets: Mystic Land looks distinctly dated; like something that would have been out of place even a few years ago. By being a little bit of everything, it’s pieced together from different game types in terms of looks too. That’s not a deal breaker, but if you’re crazy about great graphics, this isn’t going to be the title for you.
Fortunately, it makes up for it by always having something different to offer. Lost Amulets: Mystic Land frequently feels like 4-5 different casual games rolled into one, which is very welcome indeed.
