Knightin’+ (download from the App Store and Play Store) doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to its inspiration. It’s an old school dungeon adventure through-and-through, and while it adds a few modern touches here and there, it never deviates too far from its 90’s heart.

You play a stumpy little knight who’s hacking his way through a series of increasingly tough dungeons. They’re filled with horrifying yet adorable monsters, spiky traps and all manner of loot. Kill, collect, gain new skills, move on.

It’s a simple but effective rhythm and the game makes sure to ease you in to the experience. It doesn’t take long before things are getting tough, and you’ll need to use everything at your disposal to survive.

This isn’t roguelike tough, it’s a different kind of tough. The kind of tough where getting through a section that’s been causing you grief will result in a fist pump and a whoop of joy. Which, let’s be honest, is no bad thing.

There isn’t a lot of sparkle here in terms of the game’s look, but the story has its tongue rammed into its cheek and the gameplay is sharp enough that you’re going to forgive the lack of visual flair.

There are bosses, there are secrets, there are shops. Knightin’+ has pretty much everything you’d expect from a retro dungeon adventure, but it’s also made with love. This is as much an homage as anything else, and it wears those influences on its armored sleeve.

It might be too difficult for some, but if you’re looking for a meaty challenge that isn’t afraid to do things the old-fashioned way, then you’re going to fall in love with everything that Knightin’+ has to offer.
