Ever since Downwell came out, platformers have looked in different directions. Verticals have come into play, and there have been plenty of games that have taken the up-down route since. King Scape is the latest of them.

The game sees you playing as the titular king. Your job is to smash through platforms with a massive hammer to escape the enemies closing in on you. You’ve got one control – tap to thwack.

You’re a vulnerable king though. Landing on enemies will kill you. Getting touched by enemies will kill you. The projectiles that some of your foes toss are going to kill you. Your smash is the only weapon you have – it’ll kill anything on the same level as you are, as well as opening up crates filled with diamonds and power-ups.

The game looks lovely, and there’s a slickness to the gameplay that makes it easy to jump back in for another go when you die. But the more you play, the more repetitive the action gets. King Scape doesn’t quite have the chops to keep you entertained for long periods.

After a few smashes, there’s not much else to explore. There’s none of the experimentation and exploration of Downwell here. That’s going to be fine for some players, but others are going to lose interest pretty quickly.

If you’re looking for a game to fill a few minutes of time here and there, then King Scape fits the bill pretty nicely. However, if you’re looking for something with a bit more meat on its bones, you’re going to to want to look elsewhere.
